I started off by using my green linen-handled BAD to field dress a whitetail I killed with my bow early this morning, then returned home to find an Urban Shadow Camo/Black G-10 FBM from the "For Sale" forum had arrived! (Thanks, Iron4045) Life is good!

[Please don't ask for photos of the deer. I filled my antlerless tag today by killing a yearling doe (what I like to refer to as a "freezer queen"). :) I'll go after the big boys later!]

The BAD is an excellent knife for deer hunting, in case anyone needs an excuse to buy (another) one.

The BADs are very nice little blades. Congrats on the doe!

Congrats on the deer! Bow season opens here in VA tomorrow. BADs are my favorite knife!

Thanks, guys.

All the knives I buy are intended to be "users" (at least in my mind; I guess that's how I justify spending the money). I don't do a whole lot of camping but I do a lot of hunting, so most of the knives I buy that aren't EDC types tend to be hunting knives or at least suitable for hunting.

The BAD impressed me (and my hunting buddy) as an honest-to-goodness hunting knife. The size and shape is just what I look for in a knife to field-dress deer. The blade is perfect for turning upside down with my index finger along the spine and over the tip for opening up the deer's belly without piercing the innards.

When I was working on the deer this morning, I had its butt propped up on a flat rock for easier access for the delicate job of cutting around the anus and freeing it so it can be pulled back through to the body cavity. It was cold and raining hard, and I was hurrying. Not once, but three times I slipped while cutting downward and hit the blade edge on the rock. (I should have changed tactics after the first time. And I realized it too, and still kept on....) When I got home, I carefully checked the edge. Not even a tiny nick or roll. Heck... I've chipped an S30V blade on a Spyderco by nicking a bone one time. Three whacks on a rock didn't faze the INFI. :)

I still have an "either sex" bow/muzzle loader tag, a regular buck tag, and an antlerless deer management permit. I wonder if I'll get to try out my new Battle Mistress on the next deer? Hmmm, duck season opens next week... maybe I can use it to breast out teal....

GO GET 'EM!

...and dress warm. It's going to be in the 30's tonight and chilly in the morning!

Good hunting,

Good job on tagging the doe. There was a great article in F&S or OL this month on the fact that there is no shame in taking a doe - it is necessary with today's population boom. And great for meat.

Some guys are all about the mount. I'd rather put meat in my freezer.

Some day, I'll get good enuf to tag out several times in my AO. (My zone is pretty much open for doe tags. You can keep buyin em as long as they keep sellin em. I've known guys that get 6 or 8 of them. Heck, I've got a client that hits 2 and one buck annually - in no-deer-round-here Massachusetts!)

way to go bro, that's nice to bag one this early.

i havn't gotten one yet (in fact i'm watching some out my hotel window right now, on another work trip...) i need to get in the stand soon!

but, i do hope to do another hog hunt tonight on the way home.

congrats again.

It was cold. Saw one doe bedded down on my way to the stand that didn't bother to get up (10 yards off the logging road I was on). Another 2 doe and 2 young'ins at 8:30am. The lead doe came within 20 yards and spooked as I started to draw. Boy this bow hunting stuff isn't easy :)

At least it was a good day in the woods and lots of deer....no bucks though.
