A week or more ago, a longtime BFC member contacted me to see if I still wanted a Schrade 858OT. I had posted a WTB some years ago, and he uncovered that old post somehow and extended a very fair deal.

I was happy to take him up on his offer, and the knife arrived a few days ago. I couldn't be more pleased with it. I believe this one has the carbon blades. A spot test on the underside of a blade showed some darkening.

Congrats on the 858. Thats a nice one...
I can't remember, did those come with a sheath ?

Yes, it came with a leather sheath.

You're right about the carbon blades. The Schrade Steel blades had a + sign after the Schrade name. Good buy on the 858!

I read somewhere here that some Schrade+ steel sneaked out without the + stamp on the 858's. Don't know if that's true or not.

The + was omitted from some of the OT's when the conversion to SS started.
Thats a great 858 with or without the + !

They came both with, or without the sheath. The brown boxes they were packaged in were two different sizes, and the sheath was noted.

I'll take a guess. Is it the Schrade factory?

Some time back, I bought one of these 858s on eBay with some poor pictures. Lesson learned. When it came, it looked like it was sharpened by a drunk with a wood rasp. I've slowly worked out some of the nasty grooves with sandpaper, but it's still got a ways to go. If I ever get it looking pretty nice I'll post some pics. It does have the stainless blades.

Sometimes its nice to get one that needs a little tlc, if the price is right...
There is something therapeutic about bringing an old one thats had a hard life, back to life . I don't get them very often, but when I do, I always forget to take "before" pictures.

I just finished watching an 858 on the bay. N.I.B with all the paperwork. It went for 93 dollars.
I was going to bid, but I really thought it was going to go a lot higher than it did.
Oh well, there will be others

you know it is amazing at all the knives i have gotten none of them are truly sharp at least by my measurement. and i agree nothing is better than lovingly taking a dull knife and restoring it to the sharpness it was intended to have.
(my measurement is can it shave the hair on my arm)

Congrats great purchase......
That big clip blade has a beautiful profile. I think I need to look around for one..:)
