A Very Snowy Campout at Lodgepole

Every January I do an overnight campout at Lodgepole in Sequoia NP. Normally I go with the scouts, but this year I went with my son and a couple friends and their kids. There has been a good amount of snowfall in the Sierras so far this year, but Lodgepole is close to the snow line for some of the early heavy storms so it does not have as much snow as the high country. Nonetheless, it has plenty for our purposes.

On the drive up, we saw these deer feeding nonchalantly just above the park entrance in the foothills

And we could see Castle Rocks and Moro Rock on the way up

When we got to Lodgepole there was about 7-8' of snow on the ground. We decided to just set up our tents in the cleared parking area instead of trying to prepare tent sites in the deep soft snow. Here is my tent, see the snow depth of the wall behind it

This morning we got up and took the kids to the very popular sledding hill at Wolverton. We got there before the daytripping crowds from the valley arrived.

And there was a lot of hoar frost at Wolverton

We all had a great time. Good food and plenty of hot chocolate makes for an enjoyable trip.

Excellent pictures, as usual, lambertiana.

BTW, didn't happen to run into Clifton Clowers did you? :D

:D Very nice Doc! Claude King would be proud.

Great pics. It's been many years since I was last there but the memories are still good.

That looks like an amazing time. Reminds me of all the winter camping we did way back when I was in the BSA. Great pics!

exellent pics! wish we could have a few feet of that snow up here!

and a 4runner to boot!

:D

Cool pictures. What were the temps? How did the tents do in the cold? How are they anchored in the parking lot?

I really need to stop looking at all the pics with so much snow :(

Great pics, thanks for sharing them.

According to the thermometer in the 4Runner, it was 27 when we got there, and in the morning when we got up it was 19. That is about ten degrees warmer than what we typically experience on these January campouts at Lodgepole.

We anchor the tents by various means. I had my fly tied off on the grill of my friend's van. And we use snow in a shovel as an anchor for guy lines. If we are setting up on the deep snow, we can use long branches pushed into the snow, too.
