A very special day

Not to long ago there was a thread asking people which knife got them into knives. My answer was a no brand stiletto shaped folder I found on my grandfather's attic when I was a young boy. My grandfather promised me I could have it when I was older. However an unfortunate illness resulting in his death prevented him from ever having a chance to pass it on to me. Many years later while moving his possessions to my grandmothers new home I hoped to come across it again but I never did.

This afternoon I got a call from my grandmother that she wanted to see me. When I got there this is what she presented me with:

I couldn't believe my eyes. This blade is pretty much where it all started for me. It's probably a cheap piece of crap but needless to say that's completely irrelevant.

Blade length is 4.9", overall length is 10.8". There's no branding to identify it. It says "Rostfrei" on the blade but that's it. As you can see there's some pretty significant damage to the blade but the overall fit and finish isn't half bad, as to be expected there is some mild bladeplay but the handle is rocksolid and airtight with all pieces fitting nicely. Not bad for a 30+ year old blade that has seen some obvious hard use.

Anyway, just wanted to share this special moment with fellow edge aficionados :D

Wow, man. That's so awesome of your grandmother to go out of her way like that.

I bet that things mean more than any knife in your collection. Display it.

The steel means that it's a SAK that expanded with age. Nice knife; I'm glad you could get it after all these years.
It's nice that you value your grandfather. That is special.

Very cool! Rostfrei just means stainless. It was probably made in Germany. It's probably not a bad knife, seriously!

I wish I had my knife that started it all! It's long gone though. Went to the place where all the lost stuff goes...

Excellent, brother. Thanks for sharing with us, made my day a little better after reading it which is saying something, since it's been a pretty good day today!

Thanks guys, I'm still debating doing some repairs on it or keeping it as is. It'll never become a user so I'm leaning towards keeping it as is. It's just that a dull edge screams to be fixed

Eh, if you're not going to use it I'd leave it as is. After all, your grandpa put that edge on there. I'd just display it with pride!

Very cool story brother, sharpen it up and carry it proudly! Your Grandpa wouldn't want it just sitting in a drawer somewhere. The rostfrei (German for stainless) means it's European and the handle looks like buffalo horn, but it is hard to tell. More than likely made in Italy.
