A Very Underrated and Overlooked Knife: Lone Wolf Mini Landslide

Hi Folks,

Many people seem not to be aware of the Lone Wolf Mini Landslide (or Landslide), or overlook the knife for something more expensive. This knife only costs $37, currently, though I paid much less for mine.

The knife has N680 Nitrogen Steel so it does not rust. "N680 is a chromium-molybdenum conventionally produced stainless steel with the addition of vanadium and nitrogen. Excellent corrosion resistance properties, especially in salt water. Good harden ability and high obtainable hardness. High wear resistance and ability to preserve keenness." It is very corrosion resistant. I have had mine in salt water, not simply around the water, but immersed, for 4 hours at a time without a sign of rust. I usually rinse it off at the end of the day just to be on the safe side.

I was looking for a knife to use around salt water but did not want to have a lot of money invested in case I lost it. What I got was better than I hoped. The saber ground blade has a very stout tip, just what you need when poking around and prying things in the water. Overall, it is about the size of the Mini Griptilian, same blade length, but the handle is slimmer. It was designed as a harsh environment hunting and skinning knife and for that it would do a good job. It is not as good of a slicer as a Spyderco Delica because of the thick spine and stout tipped saber grind. It is about as good as a Mini Griptilian, though. I liked it so much I bought two!

The knife is linerless. The lock up is solid and the knife is well finished. The blade rolls into the lock and out of lock like it is on ball bearings. It is very smooth and well finished. The walk and talk is very nice. The fit and finish are near perfect on both of mine (both are orange). Blade centering is perfect.

You have a choice of colors with the Mini Landslide. You can get the orange you see here, OD green, or for a bit more money, pink. There is a larger Griptilian sized version called the Landslide, if this one is too small for your liking.

If you are looking for a good outdoor knife or salt water knife, this one is hard to beat for the money, and as far as fit and finish, you would have to pay a whole lot more to get a better knife.

Never saw this one, thanks for heads up! A lock back Griptilian!

N680... could a steel maven chime in with comments on that?

I like the simple design.

Just bought one thanks OP. I really like Lone Wolf Knives and their/Benchmades N680. In my experience it has preformed like VG10, but I'm no expert.

Yeah, the N680 is same steel used on the H2O knives, very rust-resistant. I have never used it so I have no idea how it holds up.

I got my at Knifeworks.

N680 holds an edge about like 420hc (except that hardened by Bos) in my experience. It is better than H1, which is soft, but not as good as 154cm or VG10. Still, it is pretty good. It will stand up to at least 1 or 2 deer.

I think BM needs to update their website. It has been the same for Lonewolf for a long time. All I know is that Knifeworks gets a lot of exclusive Bm products and they stock these knives.

I was thinking of grabbing one of these. The N680 supposedly has pretty good corrosion resistance.

Yes, it's been discontinued. I've seen the larger Landslide at Cabela's brick-&-morter for around $75, but not the Mini.

I'd grab one from Knifeworks if you want one; they are the only source I've found for them, at least at this price.

I had the larger version. Great knife, just that I have so many it got lost in the shuffle. For that price its a lot for the money..

If it is discontinued it is a crying shame. It is a nice knife. It is a nicer knife than many highly touted knives that cost much more. The Landslide is only $45.95. There is an All Terrain model for $4 more. But, the mini suits my needs. I would say that if anybody wants one they should get them while they can. I got two in case I lose one (or my wife falls in love with it ;) ).

I owned and returned two of this particular model due to the locking mechanism failing. Was extremely disappointed as I loved the knife. Hope you all have better luck.

I agree with that statement Doc to an extent. No obviously N680 is obviously not as good as VG-10 or 154CM.But this Austrian steel is more of a perfected version of 425M in every way except for the addition of nitrogen and more chromium. In my opinion it's a sweeter sharpening version of 440A in performance...at least from my judgement with the Swale model.

One of the best little production folders out there. Still carry mine. They are discontinued, but you can still find some floating around on the web. I'd argue that N680 has treated me better with this blade than with many different VG10 and 154CM blades I've worked with in the past for the cost. Can't beat it for the price now, now if only someone at benchmade wants to do a re-iussue...

I've got the full size model. I really like it in most respects. I've had really good results with n680 thus far. My only caveat has to do with how Benchmade setup the backspring on this model. It allows the spring to actually slide out, over time, diminishing lockup, and basically turning the knife into a slipjoint. I sent my first model back when that happened, and BM replaced it promptly, but when the replacement started showing the same misbehavior, I just fixed it myself. It seems like Spyderco and Cold Steel do a better job with their back-locks in this regard. I really like the platform and wish they'd just worked out the kinks and kept it in production...maybe under the "Hunt" label.
