....is a cell phone!!!

Last night, I went in to work not really expecting anything extraordinary to happen. I'm a tanker truck driver and just recently started to occasionally load up at very remote well sites.

I was only about six miles away from an interstate highway, but I may have well been sixty when I got stuck in some very soft mud. I had been hoping to get in and out before it got too late, but I ended up waiting for a couple of hours for a wrecker to come and get me out.

If it hadn't been for my cell phone, I would still be there.

I usually try to carry gear for unexpected situations, but this one really caught me with my pants down! :o

I agree. A few months ago, the wife made me enter the 21st century by handing me a cell phone as she said, don't leave home without it. It's come in handy a couple times, but I figure I'll break it eventually.

Definitely a good thing to have at all times. Just to make sure that piece of gear doesn't run out at the wrong moment I bought a little spare battery/charger thing by the company Cellboost at Radio Shack for about $6. From what I remember it's good for 60 minutes talking and a few hours of standby (can't remember the specific number of hours). Link to cellboost products

Edit: OK, maybe I was just a little off when I said "few hours," more like 60 hours of standby

Ive broken 4 of them but their not that expensive to replace and the provider will give you a deal if you complain enough ;)

Cell phones are cheap. Where I live and hunt, etc. Nobody can get a tower :(
That's why I have a Satellite Phone......$36 USD for 30mins. per month. Pricey, but whatchagonnado??

I dont have one... Dont really want one until I think about the contact issues when you really need help.

Might have to try putting it off for a while longer... or getting one of those pre-paid deals!

Have to show my wife this thread...I only broke one and I'm in 'trouble'
:D

Is it true that a cell phone without a contract will still make 911 calls?
Or is that just another urban legend?

Oh yeah, I refer to my cell phone as 'my leash'
:grumpy:
;)

Yes, even without a contracting service provider, if your phone gets any signal strength, it can place a 911 call...FCC mandated. Our military Battlefield Spectrum Manager confirmed this with me...a good option...Since I (the family) lives on post, I dumped my cell phone, but made sure my wife has hers...I'm not in a "important" leadership position, but I'm starting to regret the decision and will have to get mine "activated" again. A lot of situations (not really emergencies) come up and it is extremely handy. Since my wife does student teaching with a 40 minute drive one-way, it's pretty critical for crisis such as the train/chlorine gas issue that happened in SC just 30 minutes down the road from us....

I just got a pre-paid from virgin mobile it cost 39.99 for the phone and came with 10.00 worth of service which equals 40 mins if I talk only for short periods of time and the credit holds for 3 months I dont have to buy more time till march. The mins are 1 for .25 or if you talk for 10mins it's .10 a min. If your like me and a 3min call is 2mins too long then you'll have plenty of mins. Best part is if I dont wanna deal with it I can just let it die after 3 months and re-activate it whenever I want and it doesnt cost anything extra. I havent told anybody my number cause then people call me for the stupidest damn things, they act like I dont have a home phone.

Amen!

And thanx for the heads up on the 911 question :)

In many of the places I camp and 4wd I can't get reception. But then again many do, so it's worth it.

Just don't let iit lull you into a false sense of security. You still need to be prepared and fend for yourself. Don't rely on others for your safety.

To rnr's point, a couple of years ago, a local station played a 911 call that went about like this:

Op: 911 What is your emergency?

Caller: We're lost.

OP: Where are you?

Caller: Lost.

Op: Oh.

:)

:D

My phone puts out a GPS signal when 911 is called. A great feature unless it puts out the signal 100% of the time. Then I'm pisssed!! :footinmou

longbow, my phone has the same feature, but it also gives me the option to have it on ALL the time which I'm not too fond of. :grumpy:

What's a "cell phone"??

Just kidding. I don't have one, but my two hunting partners do. In the eight years we've been hunting in various parts of Idaho up in the mountains, neither one of them can get a signal, no matter where we've been. And these two guys are "toys freaks" and have the best you can buy. Still don't work out in the boonies.

Yeah, in the short time I've had mine, I've found several areas where it will not get a signal. Most important of those is South along Hwy 1 and into the coastal mountains where I usually hunt hogs and will sometimes walk East a few miles, into the scrub oak and sage terrain to do my fall/winter camping and hiking along an old gold mine dirt road, or at least, where it used to be. Good hogs in there :) .
