I showed some of this in my Scottish backsword thread (more pictures coming!) but I liked this picture so I thought I would show it. I'm thinking of offering these two as a potential set for display... A Viking era axe based closely on historical specimens made by forge welding two iron bars with a high carbon bit and a 3 foot hickory haft with some Viking runes carved into it. The other is a light throwing spear head. These 'javelins' were made cheaply and were disposable in battle. Mine is low carbon iron with forged socket and then carburized into steel by soaking in a forge with the blade encased in ground bone, horn and charcoal. It came out with a very nice carbon penetration and hardened extremely well. I didn't think I would offer this as a using blade.. but I no longer have that fear. I'm still working on how to mount.. but they will be together on a plank from an 18th century steamboat ship wreck.

Viking axes are so neat, and that spear head is just as intriguing.

These will make a great set.

Those are awesome! They look like battlefield pick ups :) You did a great job!

that ax is so genuine to the time period..I can imagine that thing parting the hair of some unlucky fellow many many moons ago

As a spear thrower myself, I really like this set. Awesome work as always!

Lydia... I need lessons. I put a temporary haft on it yesterday to throw into my foam deer target. Well.... I suck.

Beautiful work. I have been doing metal casting for several years and am looking to cross over to the dark side...the forge. That spear is inspiring me!

Well bigjuice... I'm wanting to get into metal casting so maybe we should have coffee some time. I've been attempting to melt cast iron over the last week.. not for casting.. but for carburzing steel. But now that I'm messing with it... well.. why not make myself a frying pan? Not to mention wanting to do cast bronze fittings.
