Got a deal on a spearhead that I couldn't pass up its a Windlass head I had my doubts about the quality having owned one of their swords in the past . So I was pleasantly surprised when I got it Friday its straight on the socket and all around great quality . Took an old 1 1/4 Broomstick and sanded it then stained and added a few coats of Boiled Linseed oil came out better than I thought it would all I have left to do is screw the head to the shaft but it fits so well really don't have to. Also have to decide on whether to sharpen it or not came pretty sharp as is.

Windlass' spears are usually pretty decent--they do a good job on the sockets and their springy heat treatment is well suited to spear blades. Can't argue with the price, either!

I have to say compared with Sword I owned from Windlass in the 80s which was junk looks like they got it together can't find anything wrong with this head . Throws great hits hard and the two holes they drilled in the shaft are a nice touch. A picture of the broomstick / shaft after I finished it didn't think to take a before pic always forget.

My experience with Windlass is their blades aren't too bad. A bit on the whippy side for the longer swords but they're fairly tough. The handles are junk though.

I have their Scottish Medieval Sword. I've beat the dickens out of that thing and the blade has held up great but the handle has not. The peening job on the tang wasn't very well done.

The Viking spear looks cool for sure. I've thought about getting their leaf bladed Euro Spear.

Agree had a bastard sword from them handle fell apart pretty quick luckily sold it for as much as I paid. Couldn't decided which head to get just like the simple lines of the Viking.

Forgot you guys think I should sharpen this thing it's got a decent edge now but not to wear it would even cut paper are spears supposed to be that sharp? I know hewing spears should have a sharp edge not sure about this type.

One thought on sharp spears is along the same lines as a bayonet......it should NOT be sharpened. The reason is that it is more likely to get stuck in bone and harder to retrieve during a skirmish. With that being said.......what's the likelyhood of being in a "skirmish" with a spear (or any other edged weapon for that matter). I do think that if you plan on having fun with this then a sharp edge would just be more likely to chip or roll during the heavy impacts a spear like weapon would incur. I would just keep it the way it is.

I agree snake the edge is tapered now that I really look at it thicker towards the tip sure it's like that for a reason. If anything could sharpen the lower edge towards the shaft if I can't help myself first thing I do when I get something with a edge is sharpen it. This being a thrusting or throwing weapon just might leave it as is the only thing this baby will be used for is occasionally attacking hay bails any maybe smiteting the occasional pumpkin. But it would make a great home defense tool no doubt.

I certainly would not want to be on the receiving end of a spear wielders fury!
