Yesterday I went over to the annual Steam Fair at Sheffield’s Abbeydale Industrial Museum, once the site of Joshua Tyzack’s scythe works. I posted about Abbeydale Hamlet here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1105366-A-Visit-To-Abbeydale-Industrial-Hamlet (hopefully most of the images are still showing), but since then there’s been a lot of renovation work (new site here: http://www.simt.co.uk/abbeydale-industrial-hamlet). The museum now has three resident blacksmiths, and there were considerably more around yesterday, as well as a feller putting the edge on some sword blades with one of the old water-powered wheels. A couple of the smiths are also cutlers, and I’m hoping to get the chance of a future visit with one of them. Also yesterday, there were a bunch of folks doing some smelting using Iron Age techniques. And there were some nice old steam engines and other vintage vehicles, even a US contingent! Here’s some pics anyway

Wonderful photos Jack! Thanks for sharing, such beautiful machines and the history that accompanied them.

Great pics. I love seeing all the old processes still being used. I fear that history like this will eventually be forgotten. I hope that I am wrong.

What a great event location! Complete with steam and water power!
Seeing the contrast with today's production is amazing!
I wonder what a modern scythe-works looks like? Are there any?
Thanks, once again, for the trip back in time Jack!!

Thanks Jack for these wonderful photos! That triumph engine looks more or less the same even today. :-)

Thanks Jack, looks an impressive show and a pleasant way to spend a day or two.
As always great photos.
