A walk in state forest

Today I went for a brief walk in state forest.
I carried my PSK, and took the oppertunity to try out my pin on compass and pace counting beads.

It was a very bright day, shadow and light presents problems for photography as this picture illustrates.

The gravel ends, I leave the car were the dirt starts and proceed on foot.

The land around here had unusual depressions and gouges, due to glacial activity I think. Here is a tiny pond about 5 meters across.

The ripples are from small frogs that shrieked and jumped in when I approached.

After about half a kilometer I stop to look at this interesting rock.

I leave the road and follow a gorge down. There is lots of debris, some of it from park maintinance people if the chainsaw cuts are any clue. My pictures of the walk down the valley didn't come out good. :grumpy:

After about 100 meters I came to a nice clearing.

Near the edge I found an interesting puddle. It was situated on top of a large piece of rock.

It's hard to see the rock in this pic, but it's under there, all those ferns are growing in small patches of soil only a couple inches thick.

It looked like it was about 2 inches deep. I stuck in a twig to poke the leaf matter on the bottom. I lost the twig!

It is much deeper than it looked. At least 8 inches judging by this stick, my thumb is at the water line. I would not want to stumble into that in the dark!

I hung around the clearing for a while, then had to hurry back to go to work. :(

Part 2: Flora and Fauna

A facinating rotting stump. The whirles in the grain are beautiful.

I couldn't resist posing my Izula on it.

This is the side of a huge boulder.

The leaf like stuff growing on it was soft, moist and...fleshy almost.

The top was covered in some of the lushest moss I have ever seen.

This beautiful little critter was sitting in the middle off a moss field growing on a dead stump.

Here is is with the Izula for scale. I don't know what it was doing, It just stood there for a long time then wandered off.

Thanks for the pics.
It's good to see green.

Looks like a Blister Beetle, bad news if you're a gardener. Nice photos, interesting how the details of the landscape can be a striking as the broad vistas.

Should have put the bug on the Izula. Would have looked pretty cool ;)

Anywho, cool pics.

Nice outting Joben! Love the pictures, and you sure have the right idea, if you have the chance to get out, GO!

Thanks for sharing!

I'm glad you guys liked the pictures. :)

Interesting, I looked them up, maybe it's a good thing I didn't pick it up then.

btw It had a beautiful blue lustre to it's shell that I'm not sure the photos convey.
