I'd rather be showing you a picture of a dead hog taken with the Gameskeeper, but alas I didn't manage to get one. Nevertheless I had a good hike today accompanied by my step-dog, Lizzy, and the Gameskeeper sent to me by Esav.
I had been thinking about getting a Kydex sheath for the knife so I could carry it horizontally, and securely, in front of me. I like carrying a knife this way so that I can reach it with either hand. Sometimes a man might have a handful of rope, or hog, and it is possible that the free hand might not be able to reach the knife if it is hanging at the side. Another reason I like front horizontal sheaths is that the knife is less obvious to passers-by.
However, I haven't yet organized a Kydex sheath... and looking at the knife I reckon it is not ideally suited to a quick-draw Kydex sheath. For years I have hung my knives on my belt at my right hip. But for the first time in many years I departed from my tradition and hung the knife just in front of my left hip. I found that this set-up was pretty darn good. I can easily draw the knife with either hand, and I can slip the lower portion of the sheath into my left pocket to help keep it out of sight. My shirt overhangs the rest of the knife.
The knife looks like it belongs in leather, and the sheath it came with is a very nice one. Maybe I'll get a Kydex sheath for something else.
Before taking the knife out today I gave it a few wipes across an old, worn sharpening steel which restored it to shaving sharpness. It is a fine tool.
Today I climbed maybe fifteen hundred feet into some heavy native forest. The knife didn't get used for anything serious, but it was nice to have it with me. We had a wild storm a few months back, and a lot of big trees were uprooted or damaged. I took a picture of one fallen tree which would make the basis of a great shelter. The Gameskeeper is shown jammed into the base of the tree, but you cant see much detail.
