One of the characters that has been a bit challenging for me to get into the mind of is Fredegar Bolger, one of the conspirators who helps Frodo quietly leave the Shire. As fond of Frodo as he is, he has absolutely no desire to leave the Shire himself. Yet he is a faithful friend, and he helps them make arrangements while keeping the secret of the conspiracy and the secret of Frodo's leaving. This is evedent because no-one knew where the friends had gone when they returned. On one hand Fredegar is not the bravest Hobbit, or at any rate he afraid of the supernatural. The "old Bogie" stories his nurses had told him about the old forest in his childhood were enough to make him very afraid of going into it, more afraid of it than anything else he knew. But he is quick-witted enough to know that going into the old forest was the only way for them to leave in "a quite unexpected direction". He also volunteers to dress up and pretend to be Frodo, even knowing that Frodo is being pursued by big black riders on horses. He just has no clue that they are just as...or perhaps even more supernatural, than the old forest. Then later on he does lead a charge against the ruffians who have taken over the Shire. So he isn't exactly un-brave either. I wasn't sure which knife I was going to use for Fredegar until I saw the scandi Handyman. It just seemed to fit.

So today after the class, which had been on environmental awareness, fauna, and flora due the the risk of fire and one forest fire already going on further up the mountain range, I took the Handyman on a wander to get familiar with it.

While have historically not been the biggest scandi fan, I just love the spalting on the flats. I have to say this knife is beautiful, and if my first scandi Hiking Buddy had been 3/32 I would probably still have it. This thing has no issue with slicing block cheese :)

It is one of my favorite areas, with a lot going on. A small wetlands area, and surrounded by woods and a couple of large fields.

I'm wondering if this is a type of crab apple. There are some crab apple trees in the area, But the apples on those are bigger and a bit differently shaped. The structure of the tree puts me in mind of an apple tree though.

This is one from a crab apple tree about a mile from this spot.

I imagined Fredegar taking note of some foul new plants popping up in the Marish.

And some odd insects...

To the inexperienced this could appear as something not quite right...but for me it was my favorite find of the day. The persimmons won't be around much longer, so I am enjoying them while I can :)

The wild harvest is winding down now, so Alayna wants to go have a picnic tomorrow. So with it just being she and I, I think tomorrow will be a fun day. So more and better wandering pics will be forth coming. With it being my first 3/32 scandi, the Handyman will definitely get a good workout tomorrow, among other goings on :)

Thanks Todd! Yeah, I am digging this one. I like the scandies much better in 3/32, which is really cool, because I love the look of the spalted flats.

Seeing a "Scandi" blade for the first time is the thing that led me into the world of Fiddleback Forge and associates.

And my first full fledged FF knife was the Esquire.

Thanks man. Yeah, they are beautiful. And I am still hoping to land a wooden handled, tapered, and dagger ground Shank for this project...but there isn't a lot of hope to work with on that one. He hasn't done many dagger ground Shanks and I don't know if any were wooden handled...

If you could manage the blue scales I'd be happy to send that shank your way for your project...

Thank you sir. I appreciate the offer very much. But I already have one I could not afford to buy that was perfect for this project on loan to me, and the responsibility for that one is stressful enough that I don't think I want to have multiples on hand that I am responsible for. Maybe later when I finish the shots with this one. I think that could actually work for a shot in Gondor, maybe in Denethor's chamber. I want a small dagger for a shot of his meal.

Unfortunately today's wander is being canceled...the winds are out of the northeast today, and the air quality really sucks in these woods with all the smoke of the local forest fire going on. According to the weather channel, smoke from the fires here and South Carolina affected the air quality as far south as Atlanta yesterday. Alayna already has a bad cough from being out in it for school and going to the park the last few days. I'm just not taking her out in this. I think I will put together a small feast for a picnic for us inside today :) ....and keep hoping for some rain. People less than ten miles away are being evacuated already.

I hope things get better down there and I'm praying for rain for you guys. I know you need it badly. I really hope they get those fires under control quickly.

Thanks Jim. Yeah, I think we have a two foot rainfall deficit. It's pretty bad here, and expected to stay that way for a couple more months...

first time in 40yrs, iv'e seen "SMOKEY" in the weather forecast. It's been terrible down here.

Luckily a front is moving in and the winds are blowind to the west.....so sry Alabama:D

The last bad forest fire we had here was southwest of us, so the northeast winds help keep it from spreading north and the river kept it from spreading south. I really wish we could get some southwest winds going on, to blow back the way the fire has already burned, and some rain to put it out...

As of 7 PM tonight the winds are supposed to shift here and be out of the west. I feel sorry for the folks in South Carolina, but I won't miss the smokey flavor the air here has had for the last two weeks. There was so much smoke in the plaza parking lot when I went to the grocery store yesterday that after a few minutes of hanging out with one of my friends on the police force here catching up, I was starting to feel a bit nauseous and my throat was starting to burn.

Loved this thread Mr G. Like you, I LOVE my Scandiman.

After seeing the trend of smaller knives (bushcraft jr, Bushnub, Patch) I was asking and wishing for a model that was sort of like a compact Terrasuar. I don't know if this was Andy's answer or not, but it's close enough for me. In 3/32, I love it!!

Good stuff again Brian. I love the 3/32" blades and I'm happy to see fiddleback produce more thin blades lately.

I'm fine with the 3/32 with either grind on the smaller knives. Both Handymen that I have are 3/32. One tapered and convex, and this one. On any of the 4 inch and over blades I prefer tapered 5/32 with high grinds.

Man, I'm dying to pull a tiny torpedo over that pond.

It's not exactly a huge pond, but there are definitely fish in it. It's been years since I wet a line in it, but I was showing Les and Alex the frogs and minnows, and I saw a few bigger fish hitting the minnows.
