Hi,

Had a nice hike today in the Whiteshell, Manitoba. It was 21 degrees C (70 F), and winter was rapidly disappearing.

This beaver lodge and dam was on a small lake still frozen, but not for long...

The beavers were busy...

I stopped to brew some pine tea on my honey stove:

Some of my gear. This was the maiden voyage for the knife... hence the tragically clean state:

Thanks guys. It was a great time. Much warmer than usual for this time of year... strange times with the weather.

Looks like a good time! What Busse is that? It really looks like a useful knife.

It's a Boss Jack (Combat Grade, which is coated and a bit thicker than the Limited Edition). It has a 6" blade, and I like the more narrow blade profile of this one in contrast to the deeper blade profiles of many other Busse knives of this size (a personal preference). I also like the absence of a choil.

Thanks for the pics. I really like the uprooted pic for some reason. Don't seem any of them around where I live.

What's the deal with that? A whole clump uprooted at once?

Yes... that's pretty common in this area of the Canadian Shield. It's pretty much all granite, with a few inches of dirt that these trees grow on. I saw a clump of 8 trees uprooted along this hike a few months ago.

It makes it a bit scary to camp in this type of landscape in a wind storm, as even healthy looking trees can come down.
