If you like tools and are thinking of joining a tool forum, the garage gazette is not the place for axe people. I'm a member and I just logged in to find a thread dedicated to mistreating axes and hammers, and how proud they are of filling tool eyes with nails screws and glue, and how they chop on rocks with their axes and use them as sledgehammers.

I just thought I'd give people a heads up so nobody thinks that it might be a place with some axe knowledge ( all they ever talk about is wrenches/ratchets and Craigslist toolbox listings )
Plus I just had to vent.
even though the thread was directed at me , this really is how they feel ( they think that an axe poll is a hammer because it works, and they're dumb enough to leave them in buckets of water) because I've seen pictures of their unhandy work.

The water soak thing is one of the reasons I taught myself to replace hafts and sharpen. Growing up that was the method used to swell a haft. Didn't work then and doesn't work now. I can understand the frustration.

What I don't get is the fact that as tool people, they should respect all tools but don't.
They basically tried to run me off when I asked about modifying an old snap-on Wright field 9/32 drive midget breaker bar into 1/4 drive, but can't can't accept my right to care about axes and hammers.
They think that a hammer or axe is just a disposable tool that you hit things with, and replace with a HF special when the handle breaks. And they jump down people's throats when they mention caring about them.

Sounds like that forum might be a good place to get some axes or hammers that just need a new handle or a little work. Put a wanted add and see what turns up.

I have done that, but they really don't like the fact that I like axes and hammers as much as I do so I didn't get many responses. The ones I did get were wanting too much ( I think they just didn't want them to go to someone who would take care of them )
They insult the fact that I won't use anything but hickory handles And that I check the grain orientation of them.
Honestly they just don't get it and never will, because they won't except people who do .
It seems like they won't except end newcomers unless they think exactly the same way as them. ( I only stick around because they do know a lot about wrenches , and are a good source for information regarding them )

Some folks have a different view on things. Hell if you are into cars there's all kinds of stuff that is sacrilegious. Thanks for the heads up.

It isn't proper unless it has a pipe jammed in as the handle. Bonus points if it's welded. :D

I certainly don't want to start anything across forums or otherwise but any chance you could link us to some of the better "axe hate" threads?

Just seems like it would make a good read. No problem if not, of course. Especially if there is enough hate on you that you don't need it here.

*Nice thing about PNW is the rain - In the Spring and Fall I like to take all my wood handled tools, bury them head down in the yard, and let nature do the maintenance for me. Head down so they can't dry out between downpours.

Swells em up real niiiice*

Something like that?

*Edit - found one and I wasn't far off. Those guys have to be messing with you because that is dumb, plain and simple. If one of the forum members here popped on with a collectible wrench that they worked on, I would say great.

Although, I like the discussion about whether tap water is better than distilled as a soaking medium for tools. That is a good example of jumping on the band wagon to harass someone.

Everyone already knows that used motor oil is the best for soaking fiberglass handles lol.

Zieg

Zieg- that is awesome maybe even more than awesome. That is immediately going to several guys I know, starting with my brother who is a pipe/steam fitter.

I read it as "Hardon tools"... So I was initially reluctant to click it.

Yep that's. What I was talking about ( if you hung around for a month or so, you'd realize that it's true though )
Anyway I don't really want to bring any drama over here but I just needed to vent to some people who get it ( and of coarse warn you guys )

You already brought the drama and we don't want it. :) We do our best to avoid cross-forum silliness so this one is closed.
