A week with a Midnight Manager

Inspired by a number of other forum members who wrote several posts on small SAKs, I wondered how it would be if I carried a small SAK only. So last sunday, before I went to sleep, I emptied my pockets of my jeans and put the alox Soldier and Opinel #7 away. I took my blue saphire Midnight Manager from the keyring and put it in the right front pocket.

I had already used the Midnight Manager in that weekend. With some friends we ate in a tapas bar and I used the pen to write down the numbers of the dishes we wanted to order. The pen works really great. I also use it frequently to write down the mileage on the receipt after refueling. It is a very handy backup pen or main pen in my case. I know there are people who EDC a nice pen, but I don't. I have a few in my laptop bag, but not in my pockets.

When I put on my pants on monday morning, I immediately noticed the Opinel wasn't in the left front pocket and the Soldier wasn't in the coin pocket. But there was a small bump in the right front pocket.

During the week I have opened many envelopes and cardboard packages with the blade. I used the scissors several times to cut some paper, cord and plastic packaging. I also used the blade to open bananas and peel oranges. Thus far, the blade, scissors and pen are the items that I used most.

The flat head screw driver was used once. I was visiting a friend of mine and he told me that he couldn't attach his DVD-player to his new TV. When it comes to such electronic devices, he is all thumbs and he is a bit scared of damaging it. It turned out that the plug that should be used to make the connection did not fit in the socket of his TV, it was too large because of a plastic housing. I noticed that it could be removed by unscrewing two small screws. So I took my Midnight Manager and opened the nail vile, on top of it is a flat head screw driver. It did fit and I unscrewed the screws, opened and removed the plastic housing and put the plug in the socket.

Normally, I would have used my Opinel to cut food and use the Soldier for everything else. But in the past week, that little Midnight Manager did it all. What surprised me was that I didn't miss those bigger knives. Do I really not need a bigger blade? Probably not very often, at least not in my daily life, which is mainly in the city where I live and an other city where I work as a software engineer.

I also replaced the Fenix LD10, that was often in my left front pocket next to the Opinel, with a Fenix E01. I still carry the LD10, but it is in my jacket now. Since days are getting shorter and it is getting colder now, I never leave the house without my jacket, so the LD10 is still with me outside. But, the E01 is in the pocket. On monday I had it attached to the Midnight Manager, but I didn't like using the knife when the flashlight was still attached. I know some people use the flashlight to create a longer handle when using the knife, but I didn't like it, so I put them both loose in the pocket.

My pants are a bit lighter now, but the main advantage is that I have more space in the pockets now. I can now easily slip my wallet in the pocket.

Will I ever return to the Soldier-Opinel-LD10 system or other system for EDC? I don't know, but I am currently very satisfied with the Midnight Manager as my primary pocket knife. For outdoors I will stay with the Soldier or Farmer, but for daily use in my situation, the Midnight Manager is just fine.

Great post, Harayasu!

The world can be split up into two groups, there's the knife nuts, and then there's the rest of the world. The knife nuts tend to obsess over their cult worship items, to the point of loosing touch with reality. The rest of the world knows that a small sak or multitool will do most of what they want, but the enthusiast will go over board everytime, getting more bells and whistles in a bigger package than what he needs. Just like car nuts will drive a bigger faster car than the regular guy who just wants to commute to work.

You got by very well with a 58mm sak, while some knife nuts think they can't go out of the house without 3 of the latest tactical knives of the month on them. It's all a matter of perception being altered by our obsession.

The truth is, that for 99.9% of us, we can get by very well with far less than we think. When I was a kid, I always wondered at why the old guys carried those little pen knives. Now that I'm an old guy, I know that the smaller tool will work just fine for 99% of what I really am doing.

Good write up.

Awesome post!... its gonna cost money for me since i've been eyeing an emerald manager...

so far i never been brave enough to take the test... i just put a slim alox classic in the wallet and keep on using the bigger sak...

the hardest thing for me is becouse i use the screwdriver tip on the bottle and can opener quite allot...

BUT, i definately sure if jackknive and harayasu doing fine with just a humble small sak... then those small saks doing something right indeed!

please keep us updated... i love these kind of informative post! thanks for your time writing down your experiences...

Thanks for a well written and thought provoking post, Harayasu. Actually a very thought provoking post - I was going to comment that I've never actually tried the "one small knife" type of experiment, but then I remembered my life before I became a knut......

..... All I carried was a little 2 1/2" (or so) Buck knife on my keychain - one of those little fellas with the black plastic/composite handles. I was working as a freight truck driver at the time, and used that little knife many times a day - cutting heavy layers of shrink wrap off pallets of freight, cutting nylon/plastic bands, opening cardboard boxes for customers, etc. Other than touching up the edge when it needed it, I never gave much thought to that knife. It was always just "there" and it worked.

I've since retired from the work-a-day world, and replaced that knife with a Vic Manager, but I have no doubt the Manager could have handled anything the little Buck knife did. ;)

Thanks again for a great post here, Harayasu!

Great post Harayasu:thumbup:

I have been doing the exact thing for the past few days with my black Classic in my right front pocket and my grey Fenix E01 on my key chain.

So far the Classic worked great in opening stuf with the razor sharp thin blade, I used the file/sd to switch the SIM card of my mobile and the scissors to remove the occasional thread.

And I haven't missed my Farmer Alox Solo or Soddy at all. They just sit quitly in my bag :p

Good information, backs up my feelings of carrying a SAK always, in my case a Wenger Alpine Backpacker. Mine has seen alot of use both at work and home. I usually still have my trusty stockman in my other pocket. Just can't let go of that I guess.

This post just costing money! today i just bought a red manager... i used to be fine with a rambler, i think this one is gonna be lovely!...

to bad i dont have any color and translucent scales in my local shop.... but the solid and popular familar RED of victorinox would serve me just fine...

also i just realize that i can open the pen blade just with one hand!... the feature i cant access with bigger models... just slip my thumb nail and gently push to open the blade! very2 handy... and the correct orientation of the blade is great since its on the opposite side of the keychain... its solidly build, no bladeplay or anything, razor sharp, very2 usefull daily activities tools.... whats not to love?
