I picked up a handful of things at an estate sale on Saturday.

A couple shovels, a really nice old manure fork (they don't make 'em like that anymore) which I gave to my dad, block plane, pagoda, some nice hammers, hedge shears, big flathead Klein screwdriver, bit brace, and some axes.

A 13.5" Made in Sweden Super Banko and an unmarked hatchet.

A True Temper Flint Edge 2-2.5lber, a single bevel side hatchet stamped "GTW", and an unmarked (I think, pending clean up) boy's axe..

Grove Tool Works (hung on a broom handle, probably a chair leg as bear noted :D) axe, nice old hammers (one stamped "Hand Made Drop Forged), block plane.

I also crowned a new chopping champ of my collection. My Collins Legitimus Connecticut is absolutely deadly, and is the new top dog when it comes to pure chopping awesomeness.

Two chops into a fully seasoned American Elm deadfall.

Four chops.

Six chops.

Ten chops. A "studlier" dude would have been done before that, but oh well.

Thanks, fellas. Have a great week. Take care.

It just dawned on me that the side axe stamped "GTW" must be Grove Tool Works like the other axe I picked up yesterday. Not sure how I didn't put that together before...

i like the saddle too;) wheres the horse that goes with it?

I've been swamped, man. Sorry I didn't make it to the UM timbersports challenge. I was way too...well...swamped. ugh. How was it?

heck, we ended up not even going ourselves. none of my/our friends from town wanted to go so we just stayed up here all weekend...
i did look at over 300 pics from the event that was on my wifes FB she got from the U.

damn! those loggersports girls sure have gotten a WHOLE lot better lookin' since i was involved! :D
let me tell ya, i sure regretted not going after looking at all the pics of the saws, axes, and uh... the female logger chicks;)
but mainly it was just the axes i really wanted to see in person :D

Doesn't GTW mean Germantown Works, at least sometimes?. They were in Pennsylvania, and they had another name that escapes me.

Germantown Tool Works > Griffith Tool Works. (If I'd google first, I'd have less editing to do.)

And by the way, that's a wonderful haul.

Thanks for that! I'm going to research that a bit. Never heard of it, but that's one of the great things about this forum.

Take care.

Nice haul.

I know what you mean about finding a good fork these days. In the old days the tines were forged out of a single piece of steel. Now the tines are welded on. The new ones aren't as strong. This is especially true of digging forks where strength is of utmost importance. But it's nice to have the strength in a manure fork as well. The old forks tended to have longer more functional handles, too.

Not too many people know what you're talking about when you say that pitchforks aren't made like they used to be! My dad was pretty excited about it, it's already been put back into service which is awesome.

It looks like Germantown Tool Works/Griffith Tool Works was only operating for a few years around the turn of the 19th century. I'll need to do more research. This carpenter's hatchet does not strike me as being that old.

Hey Bro, That is one hell of a nice saddle. Gotta learn how to do that.;-)) I DO have a matching larger Banco ;-)

Talk soon

M3mphis, that saddle is beautiful. Nice score on the tools as well.

Estate sales around where I live rarely have tools like that. Best I've found was a new 60's vintage? Collins Boys axe for $5.

Nice couple of tools! Great saddle, btw. Congratz for getting these :)

Kind regards
Andi

As far as I know, GTW = GermanTown Tool Works - they were old school, prior to Plumb, and I believe eventually absorbed by Plumb, if I remember correctly.

Nice haul overall no doubt. Looks like you did well. Well done.

I will try and double check the GTW issue again, I know I have seen that somewhere.

Thanks!

we need to create a "striking tools lover anonymous" meeting. my wife just doesnt understand......
