Good day all,

I thought I would take a moment to commemorate, yet again, an instance of Porch spirit and generosity. Such actions are frequent here and always noteworthy and I, for one, always enjoy reading about them. In this particular instance, I am on the receiving end of a very generous gift from none other than John (fishcakes). Shortly after joining BladeForums and becoming more settled into my chosen place to lurk/contribute, I was made aware of the #35 Harness Jack, otherwise known as the 2016 Forum knife. It was aesthetically pleasing to me and the awl blade would provide a fair amount of utility. However, as it was around Christmas time, I certainly could not justify the additional expense as I am usually not in the habit of buying presents for myself when I have family and friends I would enjoy gifting to far more during the holidays.

Well my hesitance was my undoing and they soon became sold out. Though I had a wonderful holiday season, there was that small part of myself that had a bit of regret. John took notice of that when I mentioned it in a thread where regrets regarding passed opportunities was the topic. He very generously offered me one that he had and was not using and promptly sent it to me. I received it yesterday and am absolutely thrilled with it.

The size is just about what I was expecting, though it is rather light. Could be because of the single spring and overall slim profile. The pull is rather light, but it could simply appear so because the Bullnose I just got is quite stiff. I am guessing this is one of the earlier runs as the awl is difficult to pull out unless you have pulled the main out as well, so as a result there is some blade rub/friction. Not a huge concern for me as every knife I own becomes a user but just to be certain that there isn't any longterm ill effects to be had, is there anything that I should have done?

A thousand thank you's, John, this is a wonderful gift and as I have said to you before, I hope to be able to return the gesture in the future.

As always, posts are better with pics!

Great going(had to say something besides well done). I carry my forum knife everyday, in my watch pocket actually. It seems to fulfill a new task every day. John incredible gesture, Padruig obviously heartfelt appreciation. Love this place.
Thanks, Neal

A WONDERFUL gift Padruig, congrats on being the recipient of a great HJ.

A terrific gesture John, karma out, karma in.

Padruig, the awl will open with a little work on your end. I as many had the issues you discuss with difficulty opening the awl without opening the main first. I used a Ken Onion belt sander and removed a little metal off the back of the awl. I went from a course to a fine grit and eureka the knife works perfectly now. I believe Duncan worked the awl by hand using the same process, again with great success:thumbup:

Paul summed it up pretty good. If you want a little more detail, here's the post from Charlie when him and Bill determined the fix. (post #121 at the top of the page)

Paul and Rick, I appreciate the advice, thank you. I will look that post over and prepare to put some elbow grease into it.
