Guys,

My wife and I are putting together a collection of Applegate/Fairbairn daggers for 'show' here on the west coast knife show circuit...

We have Yancy/Harsey/AMK/BJK/and Boker versions...

A fellow A/F collector mentioned to me recently that Buck Knives, under contract, and through the 'Well's Creek' line had also produced an A/F varient.

I want to first verify what I was told, and secondly, if such a knife was made, we would like to obtain one for the 'show' collection.

If any of you Buck guys can help answer the first question, we'd sure appreciate it.

If anyone can help us obtain such a knife, if it's true to the original design, we'd find a way to make it worth your time.

Thanks in advance,

Sheldon and Edna

(We're also looking for other fixed blade 'original' style A/F's)

Sheldon and Edna,
Yes, Buck did make some A/F knives, called the Combat Smatchet. We made them in 1991. It was a model 912 and had a hard plastic handle. It was a 500 piece run. If you want to send me an email I will send you a picture of one, as well as maybe info on how to obtain one.

Take care,

And yes, we're aware of the 'Combat Smatchet' model as produced under contract by Buck Knives...

But, at this time, we're putting together a collection of the original style Applegate/Fairbairn Fighting 'Knife' only...

So, the question remains; "Was Buck knives involved in any production models of the standard A/F fighting knife, even as a prototype, that you're aware of?"

Thanks a bunch Joe, your response is greatly appreciated! :)

Mel,
The only other involvement I can think of is the knife that appeared in the December 2001 Knives Illustrated on page 19. The knives pictured were prototypes made for a possible order by one of our dealers. Just before the magazine went to print, the dealer informed us that they did not want to go through with the project so it was halted. I bet i have gotten at least a dozen phone calls asking about those knives! And "no", I do not have the prototypes. I sure wish i did!

I hope this is helpful to you,
Take care,

...Super response, that was exactly the 'fill the gaps' info we were looking for!

The rough part of all of this is the price on the limited availability 'prototypes'...it's a real pain if you know what I mean...lol

The simple fact is, a commercial house like Buck or Boker puts out a superior product, at a much better price...but to complete a collection, a person needs those oddball high priced knives.

Thanks again for your help Joe, your effort is greatly appreciated.

We're here in Clairemont btw, so if you'd ever like to stop in for an evening of knife discussion, we'd love to have you over.

Until then, live well.
