A wet walk around & some handle making

Went out to a nice little spot of mine to see what was coming up since spring is in full swing here in the NW now, lots of warm sunny days, fallowed by some cool wet ones...etc.

One thing ive been wondering about for sometime now is handles, for hawks and axes, and just how important a prefect or near prefect handle is for them.

It's all over the place people talk about prefect grain alignment, no sap wood, no knots...etc. So for this handle I chose an oak branch, with knots, with a bad grain pattern. Over all it took about 25ish minutes, time will tell me how this will hold up.

I believe these to be currants.

The river is running high with snow melt and rain.

I guess this new little wetland area was made here as part of a project to help bring back the Western Pond Turtle to the area.

Once back at home I took to giving the handle a light sanding and some linseed oil, looks alright to my eyes at least, can't wait to see what a handle like this can really take.

Great job on the handle man.
I wanted to make it down to Oregon this year to try some Mushroom hunting (and the BHWest meet), but left it too long to plan out. I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to mushrooms, so I didn't want to just run off into the woods alone with a picture from a book to guide me lol. How long of a window do you have for shroom collecting?

Man, I am so not the person to ask about mushrooms, I can only really ID like 3 or 4 types.

Great pics buddy, I didn't realise the Morels were out yet, I've not seen any here so far !

Nice pics & kit! Really likin' that kuksa! Need to carve meself one!

That Kuksa is really a kupilka. I haven't made a kuksa yet myself, I lack the good hardwoods to do it, and I also need some carving knives.

Yeah, the false morels have been out here for sometime, but these are the first real ones I have seen.
