I was blessed to be born to a family of outdoorsmen and farmers. My grandfather had a small tobacco and corn farm in central NC, where he raised some cattle and pigs. Over 30 years ago, when I was a small child, he made me a slingshot. It was constructed from a dogwood fork with a leather pocket and cat gut for bands. In between chores, we would walk through the woods in search of Indians, bank robbers, and the like. Within one summer, I had become lethal with that thing. I could pick off ground squirrels, toads, and harass crows with great precision. I even kept my grandfather's neighbor's dogs from chasing the chickens.
So today, while going through some old boxes, I discovered that very same slingshot, well preserved in a paper Piggly-Wiggly grocery bag. After a quick trip to the hardware store for some new rubber tubing, it is as good as new. Although he went home to the Lord over a decade ago, holding this slingshot in my hand, I am once again a six year old little boy walking through the woods with his grandfather.
And I can still pick off a beech leaf with an acorn at 25 feet. Thanks for looking and Happy Thanksgiving.
