A friend of mine a number of years ago had given me a table top that was his brothers at one time. His brother had lived in Hawia and said the table was monkey pod wood although it looks like koa to me. Anyone familiar with either or both woods?

do you mean OAK

if you do oak has very visable grain lines they look like strait lines but vary in lenght and the color of oak is light brown if it hasnt been varnished!

hope that helps you some

Ray maybe this will help-

Monkey Pod

This link has a picture
Monkey Pod 2

This link has a pic too - the two look quite a bit alike
Koa

Koa 2
Koa has the same density as black walnut, a wood that it compares to most closely in technical properties. Both are a little too soft for flooring, but more than adequate for scratch-resistant furniture. Because of its nearly equal radial and tangential shrinkage in drying, koa can be worked into bowls while green and subsequently dried with only slight degrade.
