Been looking for an inexpensive folder for that can take a beating, easy to clean and to replace if lost or broken. So far I've narrowed it down to spyderco resilience, Ontario Rat 1 and the Kershaw thermite when it comes out. Was wondering if there any other choices I missed and how sturdy these knives are for use in long term durability and extended use like hot spots. I wouldn't mind a nice steel frame lock but haven't seen one with a 3.75 to 4 inch blade.

I would think maybe something like the Kershaw Knockout, Piston or maybe a Cold Steel Voyager, Recon 1 series or American Lawman. The Kershaw Knockout is a very nice size but thin framelock. Good Luck! Kevin:D

I believe there was some kershaw thermite's released already, not sure how many?

what about the smith & Wesson hrt line up?? they are around $20.00 and come with a life time warranty against manufactures defects too.

I'd go the Resilience or Tenacious from Spyderco or the Rat-1. Can't go wrong with any of them.

All excellent suggestions. Always a good day when you learn about new options. That's why I love this forum. Thank you everyone.

I would tear up a RAT-1 any day.

Coast knives are pretty cheap as well.

Opinel, cheap and won't fold on you.

I think one of the China Spydercos (pick your size) or the RAT-1. Personally I keep a Case Sodbuster Jr. I picked up at the local Lowe's in my desk drawer for opening packages, mail, cutting things, etc.

When I read the title of the thread, my immediate answer was Emerson Journeyman. However, when I read the OP's post that the knife should be inexpensive, I'd have to go with the RAT-1, the Spyderco Tenacious or the Resilience.

I'm very interested in the Thermite, but haven't handled one yet. Between the RAT-1 and Resilience (I've had both), I'd pick the RAT-1. It's a bit smaller than the Resilience, but I liked the feel of the RAT-1 more. If you really want a Spyderco around the size of the Resilience, I'd spend $10 more and get an Endura.

Kershaw piston is amazing, 3.75 blade, the sandvick steal is a decent what I would call mid range steal. You may want to check out spyderco endures as well, I have never owned one but hear great things from everyone who does.

Good advice. Its hard to beat an Emerson for a work knife. I've used my Super Commander at work to cut almost anything and everything under the sun. Its also seen plenty of mud, dirt, sand, paint, been dropped on the ground and thrown in the back of trucks countless times, and even some (gasp!) light prying. But yet it begs to be abused even more. The ergonomics on almost every Emerson is fantastic as well. Oh, and they're probably the easiest knives to take apart and put back together for cleaning. Yeah, they're not cheap, but the confidence they give you is worth it in my opinion. And you simply cannot beat the wave for speed of deployment. I just recently picked up a CQC-10 to rotate in to my work edc.

What kind of tasks are you thinking of?

An off-beat choice is the Svord Peasant knife. Very simple but strong design. As long as you grip the knife it will not close on you. Good L6 steel, and flat grind will slice all day.

Out of my "collection" this is the one I carry for a tough work knife, it's nit my EDC but my go to option for well, work.

Idk if it'd the poly handles handles or what but there's just something about The Peasant that says "be rough with me".

It's not the price tag because my EDC, and I seriously mean it I the old fashioned sense of every day, is an Opinel 9 and I wouldn't use that to attempt to cut the same stuff I do with the Svord, not that it couldn't do it; it could, I just don't want to rough it up. I hope my pocket Opi outlast me lol
