One of my colleagues asked me if I would be nice enough to sharpen up her kitchen knives.
Naturally I said yes so she brought in the usual collection of stainless no names, one semi decent ESPADA(which doesn't necessarily mean made in Spain) all in a deplorable state of bluntness and nicked edges.
There are two venerable old butchers knives. These belonged to her dad who was the patriarch of a long established, renowned and much respected Wollongong butchers shop -Dorahy's Meats. Anyhow one is stainless and one carbon. Both handled in wood that is beginning to resemble something from a shipwreck. Both are many years old ,have worked hard and withstood the ravages of time and butchering work.
Until they were subjected to the ...(lightning flash, thunder, castle silhouette) ...DISHWASHER!!
Their value now is as functional kitchen knives in daily use but with a far greater sentimental value.
These two have been taken to Meakos knife handle health spa known as the Special Handle Envitalisation Department or S.H.E.D. and are currently undergoing rehabilitation.
Main priority to strengthen and refinish the wood whilst not losing characteristics of age.
Warning -Do not put in dishwasher nor immerse in washing up water.
Recommend-wipe clean after use ,dry thoroughly, lightly oil. Store in block or dedicated knife rack.

phase 1 complete- medium thru fine sanding and apply sanding sealer.

Eagerly awaiting phase 2! I have a full set of Old Hickory knives in carbon steel that need some TLC SPA treatment on the wooden handles. They are a "round to it" project that I need to get around to.:D Will follow your progress with anticipation.

Blessings,

Omar

cheers.this photo under flurescent light does not do justice. they are looking smick now.i know she will be pleased.

Are they different woods? Or did you do something to the darker one? Both look great, but the darker one is gorgeous. Great job! Would be proud to have those in my kitchen.

Blessings,

Omar
