A2 and rust...

Have had good luck preventing corrosion on my A-2 Blackjacks. I know you are not supposed to store blades in the sheath but I have never experienced as much as a speck of rust. This particular blade has been buffed to a high shine and does get wiped down with a Tuff-Cloth before storage.

A2 is certainly nowhere near being classified as stainless, but with 5.0 - 5.25 percent chromium, you will notice quite a bit of increase in corrosion resistance when compared to simple carbon steels like 1084.

A mirror polish will help a lot. It is much more likely to rust if the surface is rough. While grinding it rusts just by looking at it. After the polishing, it seems pretty rust resistant, but Blademan's idea of wiping it down with some protection is a good one anyway.

I have three knives in A-2, all made by Sean Perkins and all feature a rough texture on the surface. Also, all three have leather sheaths and I store the knives in these sheaths at all times. I have noticed rust spots a few times in the summer when it was so hot that I was sweating on the metal through the pockets of my shorts, but that is a pretty extreme case. They do develop a sort of patina on them, making a polished blade turn sort of grayish, but that isn't rust.
