Hello, I as considering picking-up an A2 Genesis...What should I expect from this material (as it's not widely used, so user info is scarce)? I.E. corrosion, sharpenability, usage toughness, etc?
Is it actually available yet? It was supposed to be out 4 months ago but it kept being delayed. I had one on order with www.knifecenter.com but I cancelled the order.
A2 takes an exceptionally sharp edge relatively easily. It is also very strong. Mission knives uses it for combat/survivals knives due to its durability. Snickersnee uses an A2 blade for killing and skinning alligators. It holds an edge very well. It does not hold an edge as long as D2, but it takes a sharper edge than D2. It is not stainless, but can be kept shiney with care. It is one of my favorite non stainless steels.
I use both D2 and A2 for my knives. I work with these steels on a daily basis as a toolmaker. The main advantage A2 has over other tool steels is its shock resistance. I use A2 on my larger knives where shock resistance is important. Because of the extra care it must be given, I can see no reason for using it on smaller using knives and folders. If the blade must be coated, then it might as well be made of M2 like the Benchmade ones.
