A2 vs. D2 in Small EDC Fixed blade

Just got a small fixed blade in A2 steel that I thought was supposed to only come in D2. I like D2 and wanted a bit harder/more stain resistant steel. How do they compare in a small fixed blade under 3" for woods/utility? Thanks, Kevin

I've only read great things about them as an edc type of knife. I had one for a short time and found the handle just a bit to small for me but it was in bone. I think I would have enjoyed it more if the handle was not as smooth, maybe in stag or micarta.

I have seen several outdoors folks carrying them on the forum so maybe one of them will help out.

I will say for the price and quality LT Wright is who I would stick with and in comparison to other 3" and under blades I would put them near the top.

D2 has lots of fans and a reputation for holding a working edge forever. But I prefer A2 as, for me at least, it sharpens up faster and takes a finer edge.

Did you specify a D2 model? If you did, return and get the right one or your money back. LT has been putting out some models with different steels, but I too thought this was a D2 only model. Frankly I'd be disappointed, as I much prefer D2 over A2. To each their own. It just depends on whether you personally are satisfied in the end. A2 is more prone to rust, if a little easier to sharpen. However that ease of sharpening translates , to me, into a blade that doesn't hold an edge as long, something I'm very fond of in D2.
Thanks, Neal

The Patriot has been run in a few different steels. A2, D2, & 3v are the ones I can remember.

D2 is actually both harder and more stain resistant than A2. The advantages of A2 are ease of sharpening and toughness. CPM-3V has the advantages of both, holding an edge like D2 while still being tougher than A2.

Thanks Yea i wanted D2 for the longer edge holding and more stainless. Didnt think to look, expected all Patrioits to be in D2, so I called and the owner said he had them made in D2 much less expensive to make and he likes a2 steel.

D2 can be as low as 58 rockwell (Ontario) and Dozier takes it to 60-61. I believe that A2 is often done >60 and I've been told it's got good performance at high rockwells. Right now I have a D2 at 58 and a custom A2 and the A2 is a pretty hard blade. It's not easy to sharpen but rarely needs it.

Yes, Patriots come in 3V and for only 20 or 30 bucks more? 3V ROCKS.

Check out his dealers sticky, on iirc, the left hand side of the page. I know there are a few that aren't paying members here, and one of those might have one. There's one that seems to specialize in his knives and BHK stuff, but you might have to "wade" through a load to find the one(s) you want, not always a bad thing. :D ;)
Thanks, Neal

I have a bark river pro scalpel II that is A2 that worked great last fall. Used it on 5 deer and only needed light stropping.
