I believe there has been a lot of questions regarding the mystery axe heads stamped with a letter and a number, with the ribs in the eye. I just saw a auction on evilbay that may be the missing link to the axe heads history. Thoughts?

Single Bit Axe Montgomery Ward Logging Tool

Montgomery Ward was like Sears and Penney's. They put their brand on axes made for them by other manufacturers. No telling who made it.

Drat, I didn't know that. It at least explains why the axes have been found in so many random places. :/

I have 4 of them now, letter-number with eye ribs. I've kinda given up on maker, but not the axes. They really seem to be quality and can be had fairly cheap.
As a side note, I rehafted a TT Kelly for my Dad and one of my letter-numbers is identical to his TT Kelly. They may be TrueTempers made under store label contracts. maybe

I'm currently working on a True Temper A6. It has ribs in the eye. It's some of the most amazingly hard steel I've encountered among the many axes I've sharpened - easily in the top 5. It's taking quite some time to file a proper banana grind on it.

I've still got some filing to do and then some honing and polishing.

I'm assuming the A6 designation is the steel type. It's good stuff.

I have a True Temper B41. I thought it might be a blacksmith or inspector number.
