Anybody know anything about A8 Modified steel?

I know there are knifeblades made with the stuff.

I heard it is the steel they use in wood chippers.
CPM used to make it but stopped. They have it made in China for them now, so maybe its not that great.

A-8 - C .50, Mn .30, Si 1.00, Cr 5.00, V .40, W 1.30, Mo 1.5 Would make a good chopper as it would be tough.

Mete,
You are one of the sharper pencils in this box.

I also found out the ‘modified’ part of A8 Modified is the addition of another element. {0.11 %}

I’ll bet you know what steel this is now.

Thanks for your input helping answer my question.

What steel?

There is a guy who makes knives from A8, I can't think of the name.

that 0.11%, is it nitrogen? Joe

Similar - INFI - C .5, Cr 8.5, V .36, Co .95, Ni .74, Mo 1.3, N .11

That has been suggested in the past. . . and it still is not the same steel.

More Busse trolling from Bearcut. . . why am I not surprised.

The only thing I see that's similar is the carbon vanadium and moly content. You're missing a signifigant percentage of chromium, and the cobalt, silicon, and manganese elements aren't even shared between the two steels, they aren't trace amounts either. Unless you've seen a spec sheet of this mythical "a-8 modified" I have to wonder what tree you're trying to bark up?

Look at his previous Trolling. . . he is just being a fool.

I was trying to be nice, if I said what I was really thinking spark would have to ban me from the forums ;)

Is what you have to say so vile that it couldn't be written within the rules of this particular forum? Go to W&C if you need to let loose. I want to hear what you have to say.:D

Yay specs :) Well there it is, there's more than enough difference in alloy composition to say that they're not the same at all.

i think that the bitter question of 'best' vs. 'not-best'.. has no answer because best is a self defined value. There are approximately as many egos as knife knuts and they each come equipped with one perspective and several opinions. Personally my very favorite flavor is vanilla, and I like 1095 steel. :) Arguing metallurgy on the internet might be entertainment but it's rarely scholarship.. and when it is, it's usually not very entertaining.

Out of the many thousands of knives I've seen, I've liked a few dozen enough to purchase them, and most of those failed to satisfy completely for one reason or another. Some of the more common knife features touted as 'high end' just rankle my hide. (blade coatings!, heavy bolsters on kitchen knives, awkward handles of space age materials, overly heavy tangs)..

and all these features have advocates who OWN them. Go figure..

best is what suits you. Metallurgy is a matter of science.
