Does anyone know of any knifemakers using A8 or modified A8? I am interested in 4.5-5.5 inch fixed blade in A8 and not wanting to spend more than $200.00 or so

Thanks in advance for any info on manufactures and/or comments on A8,
DL Robin

I have 2 in mind, but none under $ 200.

The INFI of Busse Combat knives is a modified A8.

A small group of hikers in italy ( Nexus group ) made knives by itself in limited runs ( usually 70 pcs ) using a modified A8 ( a little less corrosion resistance and a little more toughness comparing to INFI , mainly dued to a different heat treatment). the group has produced 2 knives so far, a 7" and a 7,5 ". A new 4,5" is in production now and it's supposed to be ready in this summer.
If you wanna know more about Nexus knives, ask me, I own the 2.
( the first two in this picture: )

:)

This is INFI composition:

V 0.36% Vanadium
Cr 8.25% Chrome
Fe 87.79% Iron
Co 0.95% Cobalt
Ni 0.74% Nickel
Mo 1.3% Molybdenum
C 0.5% Carbon
N 0.11% Nitrogen

You are true, it is not a modified A8. Sorry... ;) My bad.... my memory failed !

Does anyone know how close this is to the recipe for crack, because the darned stuff is nearly as addictive. :D

A8-modified does not contain cobalt and nickel. The amounts in your chart; 0.95% Co and 0.74% Ni respectively) cause the steel to behave significantly different from steels which lack those alloying elements.

Pretending otherwise; even for the purpose of trolling and company bashing; is like saying steel with 1%C will behave exactly like steel with 0.1%C.

Funny this should come up. I've had a couple hundred pounds of steel recently identified from analysis as A8modified...but it does have a tic of nickel. Unfortunately it's 5/8 stock so anything I make out of it is probably a bit over your stated budget.

I am surprised their is no Buick content? Most of my quality imported blades have some Buick or Ford in them as well...

dont forget the carling's black label!

Yup, it was determined some years ago that INFI is actually re smelted Carling Black Label cans. Jerry seems to have an unlimited supply.

Now, that he's started with the Johnny Walker Blue, I wonder if the glass will make the INFI too brittle?:eek:
