How does AAA, Parks 50, and Brownells Tough Quench oil compare. What kind of blade steel would you use with each type of quenching oil?

I second that question. Im strictly an air hardening material guy, but I want to do a hamon on some 1095.

It is my understanding that Parks 50 is for 10xx steels 1084,1095 ect, AAA for O1, And I have just started using Tough Quench for O1 and it seems to be fine, still testing, and working out the tempering temp. Some say it is to slow for 1095, others say it would be on the borderline and should work on 1095, due to the fact that the thickness of steel that we work with is thin. Maybe someone else can comment on that.

I use tough quench on 1084 and 5160, and it works great for me. Seems to be slow enough for one and fast enough for the other. I get great temper lines on my edge quenched 1084. Since I started using it, my quenches have been much more controllable and repeateable. My etching has revealed much more complex transitions between hardness zones as well. I have only fully hardened 5160 in it so far so can't comment on edge quenching that steel.

AAA is the slowest of the three, works great for 01, L6, 5160, 52100, etc.

Park's 50 is the fastest, works great for W1, W2, 10xx (especially 1095, but 1084 doesn't need as fast a quench).

Tough Quench is in the middle, can work with all of the above but maybe not optimal. Would be great for 1084.

Tough Quench is Houghtons type g repackaged under a brownells label. I recently got a hold of some houghton type k and its very fast oil, the fastest houghton sells. I got it to quench 1095 in but look at what Don Fogg does with tough quench, he gets crazy activity quenching 1095 in it. Good thing about Houghton oils is people can actually buy 5 gallon pails for around 22.00 a gallon, check them out, they treated me like royalty.

Mr. Edmondson,

do you deal directly with them or do you go through a "supplier"?

thanks

Hey Strahd71, I called the main office and talked to Donna Wirth, Now If you dont have a credit card they ask you to fill out a credit application but its no big deal. You can also call up one of their suppliers, I had one close to me located in Carolton, Ga. Now you also have to set up a account but again its no big deal and just answer maybe 10 questions, They will ask your address stuff like that. I tried to talk to Heatbath about buying parks 50 and they where not intrested in selling anything to me, but the guys at houghton where awesome. My type K oil is suppost to be just as fast as Parks, I do know it works amazing to me. Plus its only 22.00 a gallon ordering from Houghton, I hope I helped and I apologize to the thread starter if I went off subject, I just know how hard it was for me to find quench oil untill I found houghton,Charlie
