Yesterday I take out my Zytel Native and open it to discover...the tip broke! I never even noticed that it did, and I have never used the knife to pry stuff. I also don't remember having it fall open tip-first to the floor, although I DO remember it falling sideways a few times. Who knows, maybe the tip did come into contact with the floor or another hard surface without me noticing.

Well, this saddens me because it was my very first Spyderco knife, and it's my favorite daily carry (besides my BF Native). Soooo, I wonder...how can I best fix it? Here are the two options as I see it:

1) Should I send the knife back to Spyderco for them to do the job? Is it covered by the lifetime guarantee, or how much will I end up paying for the job? Anyone? Sal? Or,

2) I have a 204 Sharpmaker which I used only to sharpen the blade edges, yet have no idea how to work it to fix and resharpen a broken tip. Should I use the Sharpmaker to do this job? If so, comments on how to "restore" the tip would be greatly appreciated, since I don't want to experiment with it only to ruin my beautiful Native.

Thanks in advance,

Guess your Native would have to take a trip to the warranty and repair Dept at Golden. Those guys would have to carry out surgery on your lil' spydie. All the best Juan!

Which Native do you have? Is it the new one with the 440 blade? If so, I was in a local knife shop here this passed weekend just chatting with a sales guy and he mentioned that they were going to reduce the amount of Spyderco pushing because of the poor waranty...he mentioned that various people had brought back their Natives with broken tips and Spyderco warranty was not covering them. Now that is not to say that folks weren't trying to pry something, but the guy made it sound like it was happening a whole bunch to different folks.

Yes bobt. It certainly was the new one with the CPM440V blade. As I mentioned, the tip broke and I have not abused the knife by using it as a prybar. I'm also certain that it has never fallen tip-first.

I'm still curious regarding possible warranty coverage, and if not what would be the cost of sending the knife for repair to Spyderco. Hopefully Sal will be able to answer these questions at his own time, since I'm sure he's a pretty busy man.

Thanks,
