Abalone scales still popular or dated ?

I'm big on scale materials and natural inlays. One of my favorite knives has mammoth molar inlays. I saw some wild multi-colored anodizing on some knives and it led me to do a search for Abalone. Just curious what others think about it, too flashy, too dated? Is it expensive? Seems to be more popular on traditional knives. Would love to hear the forums opinion. Personally, I like it!

I don't know about dyeing the shell, but if the scales are a veneer with a cover over it that usually has a dyed layer behind it. The blue handled Two Sun, second knife down, is a veneer with a clear acrylic cover. This prevents the abalone from being damaged.

Haha......See one Above!!!

My first knife, that I saved and paid for had abalone and mother of pearl scales....
I was around 8 years old.
I ended up giving it to a girl when I was in 7th or 8th grade.....

I miss that Knife.
