Abalone Scales Supplier??

What's the place in the Carolinas (I think)? Mother Of Pearl Company?

I take it you ain't somewhere you can dive for them? I've a few dozen shells knockign around... doubt customs would let me send them to ya.

John,

How thick?? Mother of Pearl Co. for any scales with any thickness.
But if your going to just inlay, and use thin material. Large pieces of thin Paua/abalone can be purchased on ebay or Aquablue http://www.aquabluemaui.com. Or come out to california and dive for some abalone. They taste great but watch out for the fish in the grey suits.

A while back I heard about laminated/reconstituted pearl materials. Couldn't find the email I had but did a quick Google and found these:

Rescue Pearl but the thicknesses are not up to what we need.

But it looks like Masecraft Supply might have the thicknesses desired.

I haven't tried any of these but have always wanted to. Pretty pricey stuff - for me anyway.

Be sure to let us see what you come up with!

Technically the dust isn't poisonous to most individuals. The structure of the dust (needle like slivers) is such that it embeds itself in the lungs. Sooo.... be sure to wear a mask.

I believe Abalone has a toxic property.I recall from my stone cutting days there were regular notes in cutting books on Abalone.Minor exposure causes headaches and weakness, more severe exposure causes vomiting, fainting and convulsions.BTW Malachite is toxic, too. Most shell, and ivories create splinter dust ,which gets in your skin and lungs like asbestos or fiberglass.Shell is cut by the cutting industry under a water spray.

I just did a search, and yes,the dry dust of abalone is quite toxic!!!!!
