About a Becker ... and a Boy

It seems this is my night for questions.

My boy is about to graduate from basic and AIT into the world of the Army. He'll be assigned to MP duty in Germany at Warner Barracks (not a bad place to visit if one likes mountains, snow, beer, and German lasses).

Here is my question: what Becker should he have? Keep in mind, this will be his first. Also, I'd like this to be a useful knife for him, something he will hopefully keep forever. I'm going to see to it the knife arrives just before he does -- so he finds a little something special from his parents as he arrives in a new and very foreign place.

So. The floor is open for your sage suggestions.

Which Becker shall it be?

I dont know if the MP's have special rules but for the most part you cant carry a fixed blade unless your deployed or in the field. I nice folder would likely get more use on a day to day basis. However a BK2 would be great for a deployment knife. I didnt like a 7 inch knife on my vest just takes too much room.

Yeah if they still have them the 10 would be about perfect.

Please keep the suggestions coming ... some doggone good ones above.

And, I'll start poking about for the 10 asap. Just in case.

The bk2 is good but I'm able to rid myself of weight whenever I feel, at least up here, service men don't often get that choice.
I'd go for the 12 if I were in his shoes. Weight's good, lengths good, and Becker/Ritter are among the most intellegent outdoors men you can find.

Sorry for all the Esee, but IMO the Esee 3 or 4 would fit his needs pretty well.

There both thin and light weight....

Other than that I say BK14

people keep their Beckers forever? who'da thunk it. well, you know, except for me that is :)

(well, i do get rid of spare duplicates ;>)

mmm. well. deployed? i'd go eskabar and campanion as a two-fer for now, and see what else he's allowed to carry

buy him a BK10 for when he comes home, or something special. he won't know it's rare/special necesssarily. wouldn't want a re-gift now :)

Still here ... taking notes.

I do have all the ESEEs, but I think I'd like to make a Becker gift to him this time.

Bladite's two-for-one idea sounds pretty good.

He's apt to be carrying enough weight as is - I'd go with a BK11 or BK14. Light, sharp, useful.

Beckerhead #42

Oh, I know that's true from my own, personal experience.

Bladite does have a good point. A larger fixed blade for occasional use, usually left back in quarters. Something nice, light, sharp, and utterly reliable for carry.

I'll check with his CO and First Sergeant before shipping out the steel, though. I don't want any surprises on that end.

My suggestion is Bk-12 and Remora.
The 2 is Jonah Hill before, the 12 is Jonah Hill now.
Both are cool but 1 is a lot easier to carry.
The Remora for every day and small detail work. The 12 for an all rounder big enough to be serious and thin enough to be light and very slicy.

BK14 Eskabar with scales and a molle compatible kydex clip plate that includes a secondary method of retention.
light, very functional and comes in under the 4" max blade length for keeping in the barracks.

As it stands any Becker would be an amazing gift. Speaking from my own experiences a 9 is bad ass and would be a nice knife for him to have and play with in his down time. A 14 would make an amazing work horse as far as food prep, opening boxes, cutting random things throughout the day. So my vote is for a 14 and either a 9 or a 10 if they still have them and you want to spend that kind of cash. Or if you are feeling really generous get all three. I for one can tell you I will never get rid of my 9 and 14. As much as I love my 2 I could probably be persuaded to part with it........well maybe not but the 9 and 14 get more use.

I think the 7 would be a good choice. Plenty of knife but lighter than the 2. Maybe throw a Remora in to go in the sheath. I do love my 11 though. Tough choices but all good blades.

This. On another note, tell him if he ever comes to Berlin, there's a BBQ and some good german beer waiting for him!

Or a bk5.
