Being this is my first in hand Busse: I recently purchased a second hand SH and have heard some mention lately of "some knives having exposed tangs" - this knife has no black coating on the spine or edge tang... is this is what is meant and if so, what does this signify- if anything??

I don't think that means anything per se. May just be modification the owner made. Which generation SH did you get and does it have crinkle coat or a smooth coat?
 
As to the "exposed tang" issue, I'm sure that is simply a reference to the tang being visible (ala Busses) between the scales. On the other side of the coin, a hidden tang would look like the swamp rats or mad dogs. The tang is substantial if not full but is enclosed in the handle material.

Thanks, I thought I had seen some pics where the spine was coated and some where it wasn't but didn't know if this really meant anything or not. This SH would be a later model as it is crinkle coated. If it stays I have a few small mods to do- I tend to "personalize" things I like...

You'll like it. Take it out and cut some firewood. I just removed a large stump with mine yesterday.

And post some pics when you make your modifications.

The knife came that way from the shop. A lot of the earlier E's weren't coated on the spines. It doesn't mean anything special, and is purely cosmetic. The value should be the same as a SH with the spine coated.
 
Thanks guys, it is gonna be a user for sure. Just watched Last Of the Mohicans for the umpteenth time- death of Unca is painful to watch. Hits me harder than Ole Yeller ever did, time for a beer.

My 7 yr old son watched it with me and said "She is brave to want to die with a brave man instead of living with a bad man" summed it up pretty good... fight scenes were better in this movie than any other Hollyweird flick I remember for hawk n knife. Not so many "pit of the stomach" instant kills. Magua slowly disassembled Uncas- fools rush in. CRK Beret arrived yesterday- no way to compare to the SH, apples and oranges. Looking forward to the ZT NO :)
