Just visited the Buck website today and saw they have the Custom Shop up.
SWEEEET!
Just wanted to know if I were to get the handle with finger grooves......does it really improve the grip? I'm more inclined toward the standard/straight handle, personally. I also would go with the S30V blade.

Also, what's the general consensus on the Alpha Hunter, good/bad/so-so? Looks like a hefty knife. I was considering getting the Buck-Strider a while back until I found out the liner locks were failing on some of them :mad: How's it kept up on the Alpha Hunter?

Thanks in advance.

I do like the fingergrooves. Do they improve the grip? ...Some... If you are inclined to go with the straight handle, then that is what I would go with. Why not try both?

My 408 Kalinga Pro in S30V, usually available mail order around $100-$110, is beautifully made - looks like a CS knife. It has kept me from the CS Alpha... I don't see how it could match the look. If I had spare moola, it'd be different. Now, CS 110s are another matter. You do have a basic 110, don't you? How about an 'Alaskan Guide 110' in S30V ($68 - only from Cabela's.)?

I have the Alpha in rosewood and 154cm. It is a outstanding knife and I highly recommend it. It is not a light one but I will carry it in my pocket occasionally. I also an AG 110 from Cabelas and it is also a outstanding knife. If your old school its the 110 or if your partial to thumb studs and one handed opening. I am partial to both and picking one or the other would be a hard choice for me so I have them both.

If you know you like the standard 110, stick with it. At least get your hands of FG before doing a custom shop order. You may not like the feel of it.

I have a few custom 110s' with finger grooves and they handle quite nicely. That said, I prefer the standard grip as it just 'feels' better to me.

As for the Folding Alpha Hunter, I find that it is built like a tank and has the smoothest 'walk 'n talk' of any knife that I own. The 277 is one of the most used and prized of all the knives that I own.

Sean1999, etc;

I misunderstood re the Alpha - I thought you were referring to the Custom Shop fixed blade offering. As to the folder, I bought one several years ago for ~$33 at Wally-world - with rubber handles. I promised myself new wood scales, but, as yet, it still has rubber. Smooth & easy open/close - fairly good liner lock. My favorite Buck liner lock is my 419 Folding Kalinga Pro in S30V - mail order prices less than $100 now. I still carry it, long after the newness/novelty wore off, pocketed in it's sheath. What a blade - sharp - nice sheath - strong/sure liner lock - beautiful look with brass/rosewood/satin S30V. Below is a picture of th fixed and folder versions, along with a 110 for scale:

I just got my one finger-grooved 110, from the Custom Shop, this last week. Thus far, I like the finger grooves - and plan to obtain a 'basic' 110FG. Time will tell. The sharp edges on the liner where the grooves are is easily noticed on my CS 110 with FGs, but not sharp ebnough to be of any consequence. below, for scale of the FGs, is my massive collection of CS 110s:

Actually, I don't own a 110. I would love to get one but just don't like the handles I've seen on the 110 in Wally World.

Thanks for the replies.
