Howdy! Okay, so let's say that you get a knife with FRN scales, and it comes from a smoker's house. It has a light/mild aroma on it. Does FRN absorb the smell, or can it be aired out? I ask because I really like the knife, but the wife won't let me carry it until the smell is gone, and I need to know if the smell can actually permeate the FRN or if its just a matter of airing it out?

Thanks!

As the previous 2 folks have said wash it.

Just soak it in some Dawn dishwashing soap and hot water (or something like Dawn) for about 10 minutes. Scrub it up with a nice brush (even a toothbrush will work) and then rinse and blow dry with compressed air. After that just oil it very sparingly. She'll be as good as new.

So...The smell has leached into the metal parts as well. Even the pivot screw! Will Rubbing alcohol ruin the parts, or take a smell out???

ETA: Cougar, I really prefer the new Truck to the old one. The old one was just so "white trash"

Allen, this knife is from the NETHERLANDS if that means anything to you. THIS particular smell is NOT in my head.

Metal won't absorb odors. Wash with soap and water, soak with WD 40, dry, oil.

Well, I'm not sure why it smelled like it did, but now it smells just like Tuff-Glide. Of course, that could be because a few of the parts were soaked in it, but it works good now, and doesn't have that "unique" aroma. Thanks, all!

EXACTLY!!! I live on a college campus. All I have to do is get one of the college drug dogs to alert on me and its all over. Okay, so after they pull the other knives out of my pockets, I'm supposed to tell this cop that only the KNIFE smells like that, and its only because the knife is from the Netherlands. Um, YA, sure... Sounds like the story you tell your new-found friends in lock-up as you're waiting and praying for the wife to show up with bail money. No, thanks!

Run it through a dishwashing cycle. It will come out smelling "lemony fresh" and very sparkly. Take it out before the drying cycle unless it is good stainless or you will get very light rust on the blade. Then give it a light lubing.

Don't tell the house boss you are doing this or they get PO'd sometimes, heh heh!

My wife has a better nose than my dogs. She said, wrap it in newspaper and stick it in a cardboard box overnight. Don't put baking soda on the knife but around it close by. Both of these will absorb odors. She does this for taking smells out of the microwave and tupperware containers and it works everytime.

She told me to tell you it works for her so I figured I'd pass it on.

Thanks for the advice all! I'm not sure where Amsterdam is, but I know the knife came from the Netherlands.

I ended up soaking the parts in dishwashing fluid and HOT water for about 10 minutes, and then soaking the small parts in Tuff-glide while liberally bathing the larger pieces in the Tuff-glide as well. Put the knife together, and now she flips like a champ. And none of the "recreational" smell.

I'll do the Baking soda thing to the box the knife came in. I'm not going to sell it, but I'd rather my cabinets start to take on that kind of an odor. Thanks, again all!!
