there are several knives from a local seller on e??y. I was interested in buying a few since there is no shipping. They are listed as antique J.A.Henckels. There are a few whittlers I like, but I don't know squat about the older Henckels. I own one of their recent knives and it seems well made. Could anyone lend some insight on this brand?

Thanks,
Sean

Henckels quit making its own pocketknives in the early 1960s. The older ones, pre-WWI are very well made. They went down a little after WWII in terms of quality.

United Cutlery was having Boker and Olbertz (sp?) make knives with Henckels stamps on them up until a few years ago. It's pretty easy to tell which ones Henckels made and which ones were made by the above two companies.

Here's a recent eBay purchase:

any obvious ways to date the older ones from pictures, without being able to hold them?

I have new Henckels.
The Stockman is exactly the same as the Boker 7474 that I have.

Someone here on this site, confirmed that these Henckels is made by Boker, with a Black shield for stainless and a red for carbon.

I use a whittler 3 1/2" which is shaped like a stockman with two back blades and a main clip.
Nicely made.
In stainless, would have prefered carbon, but there was a mix up.
Was only 25 and well worth the price.

Who makes (made) the lockbacks ? As I've got my eye on a fossil bone one...bit big perhaps..

You could post the eBay links over in Levine's forum. Or use his service to look at the knives in question, but he charges for that.
