I heard that sk-5 version natchez bowie is wire tang. because it's handle is cocobolo wood, so need to absorb a shock (cold steel said). but san-mai-iii version natchez bowie is micarta handle and not a wire tang. my question, o -1 version natchez bowie is not a wire tang?

thanks for answering my question

My understanding was that they both were wire tang, but I could could be wrong.

So far as I know : All Natchez and Laredo models are cable tang . Made to absorb contact shock in combat .Prevents that "cracked bat " vibration feeling transmitting to your hand .

Trailmaster and Recon Scout have conventional tangs .

Only weakness of the cable is if you exert excessive force on the handle / pommel . Like hammering into a tree as a spike . Cable is plenty strong in proper use .

Not sure about the newer Laredos (SK-5 and O1), but the Carbon V Laredos have the cable tang, while the San Mai III Laredos have a "rod" tang...they basically replaced the cable with a solid rod. It may be that the SK-5 and O1 versions with wooden handles got the cable tang, and the O1 models with micarta handles get the rod, but not sure.

There was a thread on Cold Steel Forums a few years ago where someone broke their Natchez handle open, and it had the cable tang. It was the non-SMIII version with brass fittings and wooden handle. I would guess the SMIII version has the solid rod like the SMIII Laredo, but not sure.

^ Yes , this is correct . Rod tangs used on the San Mai . Still for the same purpose . It's actually more expensive to use this method . LT was kinda fanatical to make his weapons the best . I believe the Laredo was one of his special pets he commonly carried .

With identical or similar material, a cable will always have more tensile strength than a solid rod of the same diameter. A cable will also be FAR less susceptible to fatigue from repeated bending. In Cold Steel's application, anchoring would be the only weak point when compared to a threaded, solid rod.
