That page says that the Salsa knives have a wire clip for ambidextrous, tip-up carry.

My wife has spoiled me rotten with a cranberry Salsa. It's so cool, that it's going to replace one of EDC knives. However, with its righties-only clip, it upsets me that I don't have as many carry options as the catalog stated.

Sal,

Are there any cranberry-colored Salsas that actually have ambidextrous clips?

The early Al Salsas had ambi clips, but a lot of people had problems trying to switch sides with the clip, and Spyderco wasn't satisfied with the ambi design so all later runs were made right handed, like the Ti Salsa.

So why keep the story alive in the new catalog when it's no longer the case? Even with the compression-lock, tip-up/tip-down pictures of the Vesuvius, the catalog mentions that it will be a lockback and only one carry mode. With that in mind and with so many new additions in the catalog, I don't see why it wasn't worth taking the time to get the story straight.

To rectify this small mishap, could you please send one of Taipei's finest cutlery machinists up my way to notch out the left side of the scales and re-anodize that area?

It will still be an EDC for me as I'm learning how to write with my right hand do all sorts of things, but I would have preferred to have received the knife that was advertized instead of the non-ambidextrous clipped model.

The change may have happened after the catalogs were printed at the end of '02. Or it just slipped through the editing process. You'll note in the '03 catalog that the ATR weighs nealry 10 oz rather than the actual 4.8 oz. ;)

I think they just prints the catalog in a whole bunch and do that again next year.
In the meanwhile, anything that may happen would only go on the record on the upcoming catalog.

Calyth,

Maybe, but mods to existing knives, such as the Vesuvius, Native, Gunting, L'il Temperance, and Military were named before they occurred, so it just seemed odd that this flawed mod was ignored (which rhymes if you're in New England;) ).

Carlos,

Yeahbut! I can deal with a 10 ounce ambidextrous ATR. Actually, I can, will, and can't wait to deal with this very sweet cranberry Salsa. I was just taken aback by how it was advertized. Kind of like when the Bell Phone system used to tell customers they could have a telephone in any color they wanted, but neglected to add "as long as the color you want is black".

Thanx for the "heads up". We'll make corrections in the next printing.

Pobody's Nerfect.

Well, I'm really enjoying it as a right-hand carry, so I guess that all is good.

Is Pobody one of the machinists who built my Salsa? Could you have him stop by my house and drill out left-hand clip slots and re-anodize where he has drilled? That'd be super-nice.

Such errors are almost inevitable. For instance, the Ladybug's size is (according to what is written there) 168 mm overall length. Almost as big as a Delica. It should be about 112 mm. It's just an error of conversion from inches to mm. But this error is also in the 2002 and 2001 catalog. I don't have the 2000 or 1999 catalog to check if it's there too.

The Salsa would approach perfection did it have tip-down carry. I note that the Titanium Salsa with its ATS34 blade, hardly an inexpensive model as it runs around $100 at the discount Internet dealers, is tip up carry. I really feel so much more secure with tip down.

Sal, please consider converting this beautiful pocket knife to tip down.

Tip down sounds pretty good to me, but, the more I use my cranberry Salsa, the more I like it just the way it is.
