? about sebenza 21 pocket clip screw

I just recieved my sebenza 21 and I wanted more tension on the pocket clip. The screw for the pocket clip was very tight the whole way out. Going back in, it seems just as tight. The titanium threads looked fine, but the screw itself looked like the first few threads are cut correctly, and then the last few toward the head are sort of flattened. Is this on purpose to make sure the screw will not come loose?? I think my regular sebenza had loctite in the screw?

Sounds like a new screw and re-tapping the hole is in order. The screw in mine came out fine, albeit it was installed with blue loctite. The screw looked normal and the threads were all clean. It seems odd that you would have a problem, knowing the QC involved with CRK.

The threads in the titanium look fine as far as I can tell, the thread peaks are all there and not flattened. There was no loctite in the screw, which is why I was wondering if they developed some sort of a self locking screw of sorts... Not sure...

Maybe a defective screw? I can't, for the life of me, imagine CRK using a lock style screw. They include loctite in their tool kits. I understand everyone has mondays and fridays, but for CRK that's unusual. Use of a lock screw isn't the answer to that problem...so IDK why CRK would do that. As you know lock screws work by having distortion in the threads to "lock" them in place for things that will rarely or never be taken apart. CRK knows that isn't the case with a pocket clip, so why do it? This distortion can also lead to buggering up the threads in the Ti, so why risk it? Maybe a burr was present during initial installation and that caused the flattening...or just a crappy screw that should have been discarded upon initial inspection. I have seen that from other companies (Notably on a Microtech S/F that I bought new), just never from CRK. If all else fails...hit up Jessie @ CRK and see what she has to say. I'd be interested in her answer.

I think one can try and put as fine a point on it as possible, but there is no getting round the fact that that is a mashed screw. It will hold the clip just fine but be (more) careful not to split the threads when you do remove it and put it back in.

I know just what your talking about as I've had the same experience more than once...what I found out was that the screw threads are actually being stripped as a result of the clip, as the clip once pressed into the handle did not line up as it should to allow the screw to be easily screwed in or removed. This is what I do; As soon as you break the screw loose stop before you feel it start to bind while still in the threads, at this point try to loosen the clip from its its recessed pocket area...you can also work the screw in or out while doing so, but only if you feel NO binding...once the clip breaks free from its pocket the screw will remove with no binding or damage to the screw or handle threads. When putting the clip back on do not start by pushing the clip into the recessed area first, put the screw into the clip..THEN start to screw it back into the handle, you will find it goes in easy now with no binding. Another way around this is to use a small round file and open up the hole in the clip so when it is pressed into the recessed area it will match up better. Hope this helps, Keith

I would recommend you go to a local hardware store and try to find a thread guide in that size. Get one with a male and female guide and try it on both the screw and the scale. This will tell you which end is giving you trouble.

Well heres an update. I do believe the screw gulled coming out of the knife from the pocket clip since the tolerance is so tight, and me trying to put it back in made the first thread in the titanium kinda shiny. I called CR about 5 minutes ago, and I can't remember her name, but she is sending me a new screw, and I also ordered a clip insert. I love calling and instantly getting a person, no annoying menus or anything (see: reason 9298483 I buy from chris reeve knives). Anyways I am going to use a new screw per her suggestion and if there are any issues she recommended sending it in to have it looked at. Great customer service as usual. Thanks everyone at Chris Reeve Knives!
