To go with sparks contest it got me thinking about wooden spoons. Are they just as safe, bacteria wise, as steel or titanium? They've obviously been used forever but I'm used to using primarily metal spoons so I'm not sure if there is any special care that they need. I was trying to find a Ti spoon to put in my kit because I hate sporks but can't seem to find any that aren't in sets or just any that I like. I do like the little bamboo spoons you can get at places like new season's and whole foods and was wondering if maybe that would be a good choice for backpacking.

With proper cleaning and treating They're fine. We have wooden spoon in the kitchen at home and to date no issues.

wood is very safe from a bacteria in the food prep workplace goes.
Same for Wood cutting boards. The wood dries, bacteria dies.

I read a study once that calime to have found that woden implements.. actual harbor much less bacteria than plastic

That's what I'm finding in my research on the interwebs. There's even a UL site that has a thread on it. I think I may just go for it.

Don't some (or maybe all) woods have a natural disinfectant quality? Hence their use as cutting boards?

I saw something on this a few years ago and it said that the natural tannins or tanic acid in the wood helped to kill germs and bacteria.

I don't know of any of the supposed great assets of wood boards. But, they will get your restaurant closed by the health department. You've got to have easily cleaned plastic ones in different colors for different types of food.
