Just wondering if anyone knows if Ted Dowell is still making knives. I was reading the original Gun Digest Book of Knives and saw the article on him. That had me remember that I had met Ted at a knife show about 10 years ago and really loved his integral guard and cap drop point hunter.

I found an email address for him, but he has not answered me so I checking to see if anyone knew if he was still in the business.

Thanks for your help with this matter.

He was at the Guild Show and he had knives, so he is still making them, but I can't tell you if he is taking orders. Some folks don't take well to the computer...you might want to get his phone number off the Guild site and give him a call.

Keith, still alive, making knives , living in Bend, Oregon. Just placed an order for his slim hunter and axe combination. 541-382-8924.-Dick

I phoned and talked to Ted tonight. He is definitely still making knives although not as many models as he did in the past. He will not do a soldered guard any longer and he no longer makes his integral hilt models.

What a fine gentleman Ted is. He was very warm and friendly as was his wife. I feel like an ass for not asking her name. They are going to send me Ted's latest catalog and I am going to get a knife from the maker that got me interested in custom knives in the first place.

Edited to correct typo.

Kieth, Ted's knives are shown quite well in Sid Latham's book "Knives and Knifemakers". This book is a must for any student of the 'pioneers' of custom knifemaking. -Dick

I actually have a 1979 catalog from Ted that shows his knives off beautifully. I also have Sid Latham's book and you are correct about this being a must have book.
