Hi all!

I am just making quick check up before buying my first Case stockman.

I've heard that Chrome Vanadium blades are better to surgical and stainless steel blades what some models carry.

It took me quite time to find a suitable Case XX stockman with Chrome Vanadium blades, so I just want to make sure that I am buying my first Case XX made in USA with best cutting blade there is for EDC.

I just found beautiful Medium Stockman with stag handles and chrome vanadium blades. The full model is something of: Case XX 6.5 BoneStag M. Stockman. For based on members stories of their Case stockman's this will be a truely a beautiful and functional knife. I am just making sure its good to pay bit extra for CV blades as stainless versions are cheaper.

Hi,

I personally prefer CV over Tru-Sharp and I own and use both. But to be really honest, I don't think that for the kinds of usage slip-joint knives get it makes too much difference. Particularly the smaller patterns like a medium Stockman. Both steels with take a fine edge and hold it well enough. It's just the CV will stain and darken with use and time. If you like that go with CV, ( it's why I prefer CV). If you want bright and shiny, go Tru-Sharp.

But by all means get which ever steel you prefer. I just don't think you can go wrong with either steel.

I like CV blades on my Case knives, but it's not a deal killer for me. Case's "Tru-sharp" stainless is a perfectly fine steel, there's nothing wrong with it at all. I would recommend getting the stockman you like regardless of the steel used. If you can find the model you like in CV, so much the better.

A couple quick notes- 6.5 "bonestag" is not real stag- it is bone jigged to look sort of like stag. And generally speaking, Case's CV models are usually less expensive than their stainless equivalents, not more.

Good luck! Case makes great knives.

Weather its not real stag or is realstag or bonestag doesn't really bother. CV is way to go. If I like this knife, I might buy yellow handled delrin version next year as work knife. I personally like patina on blades.

I just ordered the 6.5 BoneStag version. Sure it was $12 more expensive than delrin version but I looked it this way: There were plenty yellow handled available and only only 6.5 bonestag available. I've always like bone, stag and wood on my knife handles over the articifial handles. Perhaps I am old fashioned.

Case has so many different handle versions and such... This can be addictive. All Case's designs are very beautiful traditional lines.

The trapper and stockman design's generally are highly beautiful and Case has reputation of excellent quality. I am waiting now eagerly to get my first Case xx ^^

Terve! You've made a very astute choice there, Bonestag is one of CASE's nicest handles but getting scarce as they've stopped making it.So, snap it up if you can, a very good handle material. As for cv versus stainless it's all taste (literally..I don't much like the taste carbon imparts on raw food)both are very good steels for the money, sharpen well and keep that way reasonably long too.

The pattern you chose is highly practical and pocket-friendly, look out for yellow handles, VERY Traditional and check Amber Bone that's a decent option too. Go over to the Traditional Forum and you'll find a wealth of knowledge there, and, whereabouts in Finland are you? You could be near me....

Terve to you too. I am near Turku. Between Turku and Rauma atm. Thanks also hint about traditional folders.

i prefer the stainless over cv because i don't care for that patina/tarnish...if cv takes a better edge over stainless, that difference is inconsequential to me on blades this small...i have blades in both steels; if i have a choice i'm taking the stainless steel blade...
