I found it in Granddaddy's old barn in a cabinet (I now own the old place). I think it was made prior to 1960, but it has no mark, so I really don't know. Is there any way of telling? I read to remove rust with white vinegar. I'll use sandpaper also. Then, a new handle and we'll see...

It's a hewing hatchet or broad hatchet. A 14" or 16" broad hatchet handle will do well on that. House handle and Hickory handle store carries them as well as the odd hardware store.

I use a wire wheel (using all necessary PPE - eye goggles, mask, etc.) to clean off the rust.
