Morning all,
I have been reading and watching and have about given up on "seeing" one in the flesh before hand, but I think am going to go out and procure a BK10. It will be my first real knife in a looong time. I am little guy, barely 6'4", and don't really want a little blade. From what I have seen the 10 seems like it will fill the bill.
And even though I am sure this is the wrong thing to do, as everyone has opinions, I am going to ask a question. Is there a good reason not to get the 10?
Yeah, I know, a worm can ready to be opened, but without seeing one I really wanted some opinions.

thanks,
GT

ps. I really want a good all round blade that can handle most things I throw at it. I can get specialized knives later.
pps. As I have been with the Air Force for the last 25+ years active and civilian, I like the idea of an Crew knife.

At 6'4" you're not that little. Probably your hands aren't little either. Check if handle will fit. If it does, get BK7 or BK9. These are proper knives. No point in buying a knife with blade shorter than hilt unless it's a folder or highly specialized type of knife.

There are lots of reasons not to get a 10. For example, let's say you woke up and discovered that all of your fingers had fallen off during the night. That's a good reason not to get a 10. Or let's say you join a cult that doesn't allow metal to touch your body. No 10. You only have $19 to buy food for your family of 12? You might want to skip the 10.

I'm trying, but I can't really think of anything else.....

Sound like you got it covered with the 10. I don't have one since I have the "12". It's somewhere between the 7 and 10 so you could check it out as well.
People may suggest other BKs, it doesn't matter, just pick which you think you'll like the most. Either way, this usually starts out as a " starter" Becker, esp if you hang out here. You'll end up with half the line before long then work your way to complete the set!

Yep, the 5.5" BK10 is quite versatile.

The next step up is the 6" BK12 aka the RSK MK2 Perseverance ...

Get the 10 ! Mine is perfect for what I wanted

I didnt want a 1/4" thick 2, didnt want the extra length of a 7, the BK10 at 5 1/2 is perfect for what I wanted, Good size knife !

See, I would have figured that would have been a good reason to get the 10...you know, maybe to either fight off the other 11 or go trapping. I just got briefed by my spousal unit that there's a Gun Show on the 19th in Montgomery and to hang on to see if there are any on display. She can be harsh, but she's normally right. That and she might read this forum. ;)

Hi Wife <waves>

ok, buy the 10 while I have her distracted!

Oh, Don't forget that the 4, 5 and 15 are being discontinued, get them too.

Welcome to the family!

the 10 i a lot of knife

esp if you are not planning on "survival missions" or "combat", or ... not really interested in carrying a pound of steel everyday.

a lot of military posts frown on "big knives", but the 10 has a lot of edge, and leafy nature, to get things done, without seeming like "it's nasty"

you want a nasty knife? get an EK pointy pointy, and keep it on the down low.

day to day, nobody is afraid of a 10, which is the point.

what they don't know, is that, a knife is a knife, and they SHOULD be afraid.

they're just not ;)

Nothing wrong with the 10, and it does have it's fans. But for me the 7's extra 1.5 inches of blade changes the balance and gives it some extra reach. It's actually my all time favorite BK, which is saying something considering how awesome the other models are too. I bought a BK10 just to add to the collection before they're gone.

I'd consider the BK7, BK9, BK2, BK15 in that order.................or let the RSK (aka BK12) cut to the front of the line if cost isn't an issue.

BTW, I'm an inch shorter than you, and wear L/XL gloves.

The 7 and the 10 are great all-arounders with the differences lending themselves to style and personal tastes. The inch and a half difference becomes more significant if you EDC it and are in and out of vehicles alot. The 10, especially in a slightly canted custom sheath can almost be on you yet forgotten, the extra length of the 7, maybe not so.

What knife you decide to get next could also impact this immediate decision. If you were inclined to get the 2 next, them maybe the 7 does make sense now. If you are going to get a 9 (you are going to get a 9) then the 10 is a great choice now.

The blade shape and style according to your tastes will drive the decision as between the 10 and the 7. They are both great all-arounders and there is not wrong choice you could make.

Morning all,
NJBill, Thanks for the distraction, but I do have to sleep at night. 28 years of marriage have taught me some invaluable lessons. One of which is don't cause the wife to watch you while you sleep. It's just scary.
Bladite, I won't be strapping it on day to day, but will carry it with me in the car. I have found that having something and not needing it is more important than needing it and not having it. My current toting knives are a Gerber Multitool on my hip and a Victorinox in my pocket. And I take the Gerber off for staff meetings. Something about cleaning my nails at the table bothered some people.
52100, The one thing I have found is that most "normal" sized tools feel a tad awkward to me. I can't use a Leatherman at all; it pinches my little finger painfully. It's the main reason I wanted to find an actual BK to get the feel for it. I am not sure if I would need the extra reach, but without seeing it, I'll wait until I have the 10. The handle is basically the same and the wife can use it if need be.

Thanks for all the input!
