ABS convex or BS hollow?

hello all,

i just became a 1st time home owner, & now find myself in need of a busse user for around the house. cutting cardboard, rope/twine, small twigs, etc., would be the main purpose of this knife. i have larger hands, so i was considering either a BS hollow ground, or an ABS w/a convex grind.

my questions for all you HOG users out there are:
- which of these 2 blades would be best for cardboard cutting, etc?
- which would hold an edge best?
- & which would be easiest to sharpen?

thank you very much for any help/advise you can give.

peace,
- d

For cutting and slicing, as opposed to deconstruction activities, the ABS is the better choice. And since you mentioned cutting rope/twine, then lose the choil and get the CABS. But some people find the handle on the ABS to be on the skinny side. You might want to consider liners under the scales. OTOH, some guys with really meaty mitts, such as David Brown, do not like fat handles.

monk3yfist: thanks for your $.02!! but, why don't you like hollow grinds? just curious... :)

resinguy: thank you, as well, for your input!! if i go w/a ABS, it'll definitely be choilless... and most likely G-rexed or lined, because i likes my knives w/big handles... :D do you prefer an ABS because they're convex ground?

anyone else have an opinion they'd like to voice? i'd like as much feedback as anyone's willing to offer, as i value the opinions of most on the busse forum.

thanks again, all!!

I love convex blades, easy to maintain, holds an edge and very sharp.

I've just found that hollow grind blades seem to hang up on things more during deeper cuts (cutting cardboard, food prep, etc.) For shallow cuts like twine the thin edge on a hollow grind is awesome but it isn't as versatile as a sharp full flat or a convex. Could just be in my head but everything I've read seems to back up what I've found in my personal experience.
I think the real advantage to the hollow grind is the thin edge and the length that it extends up the width of the blade. It's easier to sharpen and keep thin, while with flat grinds you are spending time "knocking off the shoulders" to keep the edge thin. Not a big deal but for some more time on the stone can be a pita.

I have both, and I'd say that the difference is not that dramatic. The biggest difference may come in food prep, with the ABS getting the nod as it's thinner, and flat ground. It's probably me, but the edge on my HGBS is fantastic. Laser sharp. The edge on my ABS is certainly no slouch, but is not quite as sharp.

Advantages to the HGBS:
Finer edge
Solid feel, nice weight

Advantages to the ABS:
Different choil options
Light weight, you might even forget you're carrying it

Just my opinion... Don't ask me which I'd prefer to keep, 'cause the answer is BOTH. :D

I prefer the ABS because, like many others, I believe small knives should be thin. Jerry once called me resTHINguy.

The ABS is NOT convex ground, btw. It is a flat grind from the spine to shoulder of the edge bevel. Only the edge is convex. If you aren't fond of convex edges ( and that's a whole 'nuther thread  ), then you could change it to a V edge.

ou812, you're a man of few words (& a VH fan), but i likes 'em all!!

monk3yfist: i'm w/you brotha.

jaxx: i agree w/you 100%: my hollow ground busse are laser sharp, but i've only ever seen them on larger blades... & considering that i'm into busse knives, i'll probably buy 1 first, then the other... :o

resinguy: fascinating: i thought the ABS were convex. but i guess that, technically, you're correct (& that's the best kind of correct): the ABS are flat ground w/a convex edge. hmmm...

anyways, it looks as if this thread is beginning to tip a certain way... i think i'll begin my hunt for one of the various ABS models. ...unless i should try an AD w/beefy scales! :D (should i?)

thank you all, for your time, energy, & advise!!
