I've not done much lately becuase of work but this afternoon at the Historic Arkansas Museum in Little Rock, I attended the ABS 2001 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies. I had a great time at this event, as I always do with ABS events. I didn't get to go to the dinner...I paid, but found out that it was at 7:00pm instead of 5:00pm as I thought. I live just near enough to not justify staying the night and just far enough to not stay for the evening. So they are all having dinner right now and following that the annual auction at this event.
Here are the inductees for 2001:
Bruce Voyles
Paul Burke
Dr. James Batson
Daniel Searles (as in Searles bowies)
Jerry Fisk
The ceremony lasted from 1:00 to about 3:00. Jerry Fisk gave a great speech. He was very moved as were the other inductees. I wanted to, but didn't get to congratulate Jerry...So, congratulations Jerry. Congratualtions go to Bruce Voyles and Dr. Batson as well. I was privileged to be there. Paul Burke's son was there and loaned the museum the 10th anniversary ABS bowie for display on a permanent basis. Logan Sewell accepted the honor for Daniel Searles.
I talked a bit with Ron Newton. He is, as I have always known him, extremely busy, but doing quite well. He had this little pearl mustache knife with scissors and comb. It is very tiny and has 1/32" liners that were very finely filed as was the pearl. It also had gold pins in the pearl scales...not surprisingly, an exquisite piece.
Mike Williams was also there and he took me to his truck to show me a piece he had ready for a show. A beautiful little bowie with 5" wolf-tooth damascus blade and copper/nickel fittings and stag handle. He always has a story for me and this time was no different.
Mike was telling me about the knife we were inspecting and I queried him about the butt cap. It was copper and nickel-silver. The two were silver soldered together and, of course, after Mike finished soldering the pieces he set down the torch and picked up the newly soldered butt cap. To his suprise it was still HOT! So hot, it stuck to the flesh on his forefinger. As he was trying to loose himself from the torture, in one instant the cap was hurtling through the air and disappeared in his shop...still hot! In desparation, he searched around, fearing it would start a fire, but couldn't find it. He finally gave in to the pain that was still present and went to find something very cold for his hand. I saw the burn, it was still visible. "So you finally found it?", I asked looking at the end of the knife. "Nope, I just made another one. I will just have to charge for two butt caps on this knife!"
I can hardly wait for the ABS Fall Hammer-In!!!!
