The ABS has held cutting competitions in various locations for some times now. Beginning this year at the BLade Show, the championship will be held there. This will involve the top three score winners plus a wild card person chosen by the judges.
This years particpants are John Fitch, Kevin Cashen, Ray Kirk and Jim Crowell. This should be a good chop off. First prize is a hand engraved Championship belt buckle donated by Glendo Corp.
If any of yall are there for the show be sure and catch this event, it promises to be a doozie.

Like we needed another reason to make the trip to that show! ;)

Yet one more thing to look forward to. :D

Sorry - I just keyed in the title under google and it came up with stuff about cars!!!

I know it's a cutting competition involving blades (like a busse test?) but can someone provide more info on the tests involved, criteria, type of knives, steel, past winners, who's taken part etc etc...

thanks,
Spyken

I'm going to make it a point to not miss the demos year!! I'm grabbing a schedule as soon as I hit the convention center  Are you going to handycap John with a 3" max blade?? :D

The offical ABS cutting test are held at the ABS school in Washington AR [twice yearly here, and at Batson Symposium in Alabama, At the Michighan hammer-in as well as the North east hammer-in which will be held in Maryland this year.
There are always 5 events which the 2x4 chop is the only thing that is at all of them. The contestants really do not know what they are going to chop/cut till they get there.
The knives are required to follow the abs testing procedures for dimensions of the knife. That would be a max of 10 inch blade, not to exceed 15 inches overall length and not to exceed 2 inches in width. YOu have had to make the knife yourself, if for some reason of an infirmaity you can get someone to pinch hit for you in the cutting with your blade. But that has to be passed by the judges..
The 2x4 event will also be held in Atlanta but most of the other events they will not have seen before and must figure it out then. Some events are timed as well as for quality of cut.
Anyother questions just sling them out and someone or my self can answer them.
Edited to put more stuff in.
The steel they use is up to them. however 1084-5160 and 52100 steels are most often used.
The style of knife and its design is stricly up to them, if they think they can win with it bring it on.
Past winners are of course those listed on the above posting as they have gotten to the finals. Another past winner is Reggie Barker from LA as well as Larry Harley from TN and Dickie Robinson from TX.
These are ABS sanctioned cutting contest and are generally a lot of fun. Blades that have any defect in them during or after the events are disqualified. Blades are reguired to meed the size plus have one visable pin in handle and a thong hole with lanyard attached to it for safety. Sometimes the test are quite difficult. We have had as many as 3/4 of the contestants disqualified in a single contest. As well as sometimes, but rarely there is no one that gets disquaified.

I got to watch Jerry and John Fitch do the cutting demo last year at Blade, and it was a great sight to see. Some of the tests they do are really amazing. Seeing all that was almost as much fun as listening to Jerry make fun of John for the entire demonstration :D

The ABS guys I have met are a great bunch of guys who love to joke around and have fun, but when it comes time to be serious, make outstanding knives.

I will definately not miss this contest this year, as it should be great fun. I hope to have a camera to take some more pics this year.

I'm attempting to post a pic from last year's demo if BFC will allow me.

*appearantly, BFC is not allowing attatchments right now for pics. will try again later*

thanks y'all - any pictures of previous winning knives?

Really incredible to watch those demonstrations, and something everyone should see at least a few times...

Amazing stuff....

Yup I remember hanging around JR at the demonstration last year. It was a lot of fun. This one promises to be better. Not only are the blades of all four (so far) worthy, but they all know each other pretty well. This years competition should be even more entertaining. With blades that good it will come down to slight variations in forging and using technique. Watching these guys do their thing is simply amazing.

Bastid, if you keep hanging around those kind of people it will ruin your reputation. Bye the bye; we need to find someone who can furnish us a goat for the competition; any suggestions? M

Excellent news! Since I will be there picking up an awesome brush knife from Ray, I guess that will pretty much put me in his corner this year.

Seriously though, this will be one event that I certainly won't miss.

Joss - thanks! aahhh....I think I see a full flat grind and perhaps distal taper? does anyone know if it's a convex edge or standard V edge?

I'm beginning to appreciate full flat grinds and "bowie" like shapes more...tell me pls, full flat grinds are better slicers and choppers, yes?

Spyken

I don't know that for sure, but I'd expect it to be apple seed shape, not flat.
