Well, ol' Darth T. got me thinking about mounting one of these up, so I got a Bhoj (it was a little cheaper and not as long a lever on that little tang).
After much foolishness with delivery and weather, here it is:

It's got some deep pitting at the belly, but it's very skillfully distal tapered and the whole edge is HARD-chainsaw file skates right off. It's also still pretty sharp ( and the tang still has some gazillion year old laha on it). I think I have a bolster I made for another blade that'll fit, but I'm also intrigued by Bookie's cast bolster idea. We'll see mañana.

Quite the drop on it, with a long tang too! Still have yet to get to handling mine, too darn cold with the propane heater dead. Might get to drilling out the tang slot tomorrow.

I know what your saying about the hardness, it's crazy.

It definitely has a nice drop and belly to it. I can wait to see what it looks like after JW works his magic.

Gonna look a heck of a lot better than mine! Just got done splitting my handle material in two, think I got the tang too hot and applied just enough pressure for a slight stress crack to start. Probably didn't help that it was about 5 below 0 in the garage.

As far as burning in goes, the only too hot is too hot for the tang's grain structure. Red to orange is fine-but red will work. Easier to clamp steel in vise and push wood with (gloved) hands

Yep, since it split in a way where I can still use it I'm going to end up using my roto router and cheating to cut the slots for the tang out and do a two piece construction and leave it as a display piece. I've got some wood putty to cover the seam as well.

Just pinned together at the moment, and the shoulders on the bolster could be crisper, but I tried to duplicate the old style handle.

Looks great!

You say just pinned for now. You final shape etc, then unpin and glue and repin?

Darth, don't give up. You don't really need a wall hanger. Give'r another try.

JW, Lookin' good. What will you use for wood sealant?

I don't know what exactly makes it look like an original handle (is it stubbier and the specific taper towards the very end?), but whatever it is, you nailed it!

What they said. Start over, work slow, and you'll get it. You can even "carve" it out with a drill.
Also try cherry instead of maple, and go oversize rather than tight-we tend to think a perfect fit is the goal, but really you need room for adhesive, and you won't split it during assembly.

Yep! What Jim said! I did my pizza cutter that way for what that's worth but I wouldn't hesitate to use it for chopping if it were a Khukri:D After you drill holes on each side make you some marks on the outside to use as guides so you dont carve into the tang hole accidentally.

Looking like it is going great JW. and Darth, I hope you decide to keep at it. I think you are going to get it done this next time... I believe!

can't wait to see them both wrapped up and finished completely :)
